How Do You Show Up? Luncheon
Dr. Selda Gunsel, Shell's Vice President of Global Commercial Technology, inspired attendees with her lessons learned from her career as an Asian woman in an international business setting.  Dr. Gunsel, who is of Turkish origin, shared stories of balancing cultural differences between east and west in developing her personal brand.  In her early career, she struggled to speak up or offer differing opinions.  After recounting her experience with the challenges of leading international teams, she advised that attendees ask questions, find a mentor, be more impactful by standing up instead of sitting down when speaking, and volunteer for stretch assignments. Just like the Chamber expresses, Dr. Gunsel reiterated the importance of building relationships as factor of success.

Can you balance on one leg for 20 seconds? New research finds that could put you at risk for stroke and cognitive decline.  A stroke is caused by a clot or bleeding in the brain that interrupts blood flow. Even tiny "silent" strokes, called microbleeds, can cause damage that affects a person's walking and balance. The research result was a one-leg balance test described in a new study published in the American Heart Association's journal Stroke.

HAVE A VOICE AND REMEMBER TO VOTE!!!

Houston to Vote on Term Limits

The November 3 2015 ballot will include amending the city's term limits for the offices of the Mayor, the Controller, and City Council Members. Our current system allows those officeholders a maximum of three, two-year terms and Houstonians will have the opportunity to vote on whether to amend this system to allow two, four-year terms. If passed, the transition period would allow elected officials currently serving their first term to seek two additional four-year terms. Elected officials currently serving their second term would be eligible to seek one additional four-year term. Mayor Parker and other elected officials currently serving their third term would not be eligible for any additional terms.
