October 29 Luncheon - Conversation with Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar
Our Texas Comptroller has three major responsibilities. (1) He is the revenue estimator where the majority income for the state is our sales tax; (2) oversees the finance treasury department accounting for the $105 billion budget; (3) and is the tax collector whose department conducts 13,000 audits annually. Interesting facts: Exports last year generated $294 billion; Texas has a diversified portfolio where oil contributes 14% of our income; 233 people a day move to Texas from foreign countries; 650 people a day move to Texas domestically; Texas is the 12th largest economy in the world. November 18 - 2 - 5 pm - City of Houston Office of Business Opportunity
Obtaining legal advice for small businesses can be costly and stressful. The City of Houston's Office of Business Opportunity announced a partnership with the Association of Pro Bono Counsel (APBCo) and Vinson & Elkins, LLP, to establish the "Virtual Legal Lab". The Virtual Legal Lab is the first of its kind, giving small businesses the opportunity to schedule one-on-one Skype sessions with pro-bono attorneys for any business related questions they may have.
This Legal Lab will be housed within the Office of Business Opportunity, located downtown at 611 Walker, Lobby Level. You must set an appointment to participate.
Small businesses can ask questions on a variety of topics including employment law basics, independent contractor vs. employee, insurance and contracts, and entity selection.
Attorneys are also available to speak to small businesses in Spanish and Chinese.
To make an appointment for the Virtual Legal Lab or for more information, please go to www.houstontx.gov/obo and click on Virtual Legal Lab.
