Aging Well Digest

Useful, interesting, and informative news for seniors and their families

             October 2011                                      Issue 14

 Dear Friends:
Welcome to the Aging Well Digest.

In this issue you will find articles on 1) long term care and health insurance costs, 2) a $42 million dollar gift to establish a center to study and promote doctor/patient communication, 3) a piece about the importance of hospital discharge planning, and 4) a video from the founder on EngAge, an arts centered retirement movement.

I trust you will be able to find something useful, informative, or interesting in this issue. I will continue to be on the lookout for the best and most helpful information on issues related to aging that I find each month and I encourage you to contact me if there are topics you would especially like me to investigate.

If you are looking to get information on a particular nursing home, this Medicare site has information on health inspections, staffing, prevalence of bedsores, percentages receiving flu shots, overall quality ratings and more.

Of course I am here to work with you if you need more personalized help with any of these issues or other aging related concerns. Your first consultation is free in order for us to determine if and how I can help you.

Thanks,  Jeff

 The Cost of Getting Old

taos sunflower Occasionally one runs across an article that estimates the daunting cost of rearing a child through college. Unfortunately the cost of caring for oneself or one's loved ones through old age is equally eye-opening. Since most older Americans' direct health costs (hospitalizations, doctor visits, medical equipment, drugs) are substantially subsidized through Medicare, non-medical long term care constitutes the largest expenditure families face. And it can be enormous. In North Carolina the average cost of assisted living is $3400 per month. A skilled nursing home in the Raleigh/Durham area is $214 per day. A home health aide will cost $18 per hour. Below are some cost statistics from AARP and the National Clearinghouse for Long Term Care which includes information on quality and choice in North Carolina. In addition there is a link to a Kaiser Family Foundation chart on the increase in health insurance premiums from 2005-2010.

$42 Million for Doctor Patient Communication

 canada lake

It was heartening to learn that the philanthropists Carolyn and Matthew Bucksbaum were giving the University of Chicago Medical Center $42 million dollars to create an institute for the study of the physician/patient relationship. As the director of the Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence, Dr. Mark Sigler states, " We want to put compassion and empathy on the same pedestal as science and technology."

The idea that a patient's relationship with his/her physician is more than merely "value-added", but an essential part of the treatment and healing process itself can't be repeated enough.

I wish the Bucksbaum Institute success and influence beyond their dreams.

Hospital Discharge

Discharge planning is often the last thing patients and their families think of when entering or being treated at a hospital. In fact, planning for one's discharge should begin as soon as one is admitted. One's smooth transition and ongoing care after a hospital stay can be as important to one's health as treatment received during a stay. Ideally, planning for discharge should be a substantive conversation between you and the hospital employee responsible for your discharge, not just one way instructions. Below are links to an article about the importance of discharge planning and a checklist to use in the event that you experience a hospital stay.

Thriving and Aging - EngAge

beach seaweed The video link below features an inspiring TEDtalk by Tim Carpenter, the founder of EngAge, which is a not-for- profit based in southern California that delivers arts and learning programs to affordable senior apartment communities. It uses college and art school as a model for developing elder communities that engage in a whole person approach that includes focused creative activity, community building, and intergenerational programs. A link to EngAge is below as well.
