Greetings!

The car in your garage may be your pride and joy. At the very least, it is necessary for transportation. Regular maintenance is required to keep it running well. Different parts will wear, get out of adjustment and just plain get dirty. The same holds true for the garage door that keeps it safe.

Gargage Door Maintenance

by Jeff BrownRemember: Garage Door Springs are Under Extreme Pressure!

Garage doors may not be number one on your list of preventative maintenance items in your home. Consider, however, it is the largest moving part of the structure, subject to weather extremes and used frequently. Maybe it deserves a higher place on that list.

A door that binds or becomes unusually difficult to operate is one of the most common problems and potentially the most hazardous. When disconnected from the opener, the door should move up and down in the tracks easily. If the operation is not smooth, the door may be rubbing the tracks, frame or have loose hinges, rollers or track sections. The bolts and screws of these components should be kept tight and periodically lubricated with machine or penetrating oil. Do not oil the tracks! Oil in the tracks will only accumulate dirt and grime, making matters worse. Make sure a red release cord and handle is attached to the opener no more than 6 feet above the garage floor.

Always keep in mind the garage door springs are under extreme pressure. Any repairs or adjustments to those components should only be accomplished by a qualified overhead door professional.

Mommy Test

A mother was walking with her four year old daughter one day when the daughter picked up something off the ground and started to put it into her mouth. The mother stopped her and said she shouldn't do that.

"Why," asked the little girl.

"Because it's dirty. It's been on the ground. You don't know where it's been. It probably has germs."

The little girl looked up at her mom with admiration and asked, "How do you know so much?"

Thinking quickly, the mother said, "All moms know so much. We have to. It's on the Mommy Test. If you don't know it, you don't get to be a mommy."

The little girl pondered this for a few minutes, then her face brightened. "I get it!" she said. "If you don't pass the test, you get to be a daddy!"

"Yup," said the mom.
