The Eastern Little Horn
Daniel 8:9 Theories Examined
Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong
the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones
toward the four winds of heaven. And out of one of them came a
little horn. Dan 8:8,9
Prophecy commentators paid very little attention to the 8th chapter
of Daniel prior to 1800. The majority of 17th century expositors
like Isaac Newton and Bishop Newton believed its little horn (8:9)
merely signified Rome as did the little horn of Daniel 7.
But after 1800, the 2300 "day" prophecy in Daniel 8 became the
focus of international attention. More and more expositors taught
that this time period was 2300 "years" and would extend to 1844.
Further, developments within the Ottoman Empire and the sixth
trumpet prophecy brought increasing attention to the Middle East.
As a result, expositors increasingly began to view the little horn as
Mohammedanism instead of Rome. By the late 19th century, this
interpretation had become the standard and it is today.
The following links examine the several theories historicists have
held on this prophetic symbol. As you consider them, it will help
you understand why this shift of opinion took place and why the
rival teachings continue to be taught.
