2009 Community Benefit Report
A message from our Chief Executive
On behalf of the Providence Health & Services Southwest Washington Service Area, it is my pleasure to share with you our 2009 Community Benefit Report. Please take a moment to browse through the web page, view the videos, and download the full report.
As a nurse, I am especially proud of the contributions made by Providence to nursing education, including $100,000 toward equipment and scholarships at Centralia College. Providence also contributed $2.6 million to support physician education through our through our family practice residency program at Providence St. Peter Hospital.
It is an honor to continue the work of the Sisters of Providence in supporting the health care needs of Thurston, Lewis, Mason, Grays Harbor and Pacific counties. Last year, Providence provided more than $37 million in charity care and community benefit programs to residents in Southwest Washington.
Every day, our employees, physicians and volunteers are proud to carry out the Providence mission, "to reveal God's love for all, especially the poor and vulnerable." It is a blessing to be part of this amazing team of dedicated, talented and compassionate caregivers. Together, we are creating a healthier future for the communities we serve.

Gifts enable Foundation to award $169,000 in grants
Thanks to charitable gifts from generous individuals, businesses and organizations, the Providence St. Peter Foundation Board approved $169,000 in funding in the spring grant cycle for Providence facilities and services.
Included in the approved grant requests was more than $35,000 to support the purchase of equipment and continued renovations at the Providence Chemical Dependency Center (CDC). Catherine Jacobson, an Administrative Assistant at the CDC said, "grants from the Foundation mean that we can purchase exercise equipment and educational materials, helping patients leave with new recreational habits and skills, increasing the probability of their success in living addiction free. Funds to augment the remodeling budget mean that there is a much-improved environment for patients and staff. Our facility frequently hosts meetings for government and local service agencies. Foundation grants mean that we will be able to replace antiquated and less than functional electronic equipment. This will demonstrate Providence Core Values of excellence and stewardship to our many visitors".
Grants also funded the purchase of emergent medical technology, including a Visucam Fundus Camera for the hospital's Emergency Center. The high tech camera enables Providence staff to rapidly diagnose eye disease and conditions such as retinal ulcers.
Grant requests are submitted to the Foundation bi-annually by administration and staff at the hospital, Providence Mother Joseph Care Center, and Providence SoundHomeCare & Hospice. Patient care services, health education, capital improvements and vital equipment purchases have all been made possible through charitable gifts.
