Wow! What a summer it has been - between the heat waves and rainstorms, and the earthquake and the hurricanes, our part of the country has taken quite a beating. We hope that as we go into the fall, Mother Nature will be a little kinder to us! |
| Internship Opportunities | |
|
Over the years, we have participated in academic internships at high school and college levels o f education.
Frederick County Public Schools has sponsored formal internships at various Frederick businesses, representing a wide variety of occupations since the mid 1970's. From the early "executive internship program" to the current programs in all high schools, our hospital has been an enthusiastic participant.
Our internships provide an overview of the functions of a modern small animal veterinary practice. The internship lasts for one half of a school year, at least two hours per schoolday, and includes:
- Working with animal caretakers and learning the importance of the proper cleaning and disinfecting of the hospital.
- Learning about safe animal handling
- Learning about animal nutrition
- Rotations through our various hospital departments with our technicians to learn the operating procedures of our laboratory and pharmacy, and the skills associated with radiology, surgery, and anesthesia.
- Time at our front desk learning office procedures and client relations
- Job shadowing each of our doctors at office hour appointments
At the end of their internship, the student is asked to make a presentation on some aspect of veterinary medicine to the entire hospital staff, where questions can be asked and various cases discussed. Please call our office at 301-662-2322 to inquire about our internship opportunities.
Our next article will talk about our undergraduate college as well as our veterinary school internships.

How many of you have a pack of sugar-free gum in your purse/pocket? Do you pop sugar-free mints? Do you eat sweetened cereals? Chew nicotine gum? This ingredient is xylitol - a sugar alcohol used commonly as a sweetener. You can also find xylitol in many oral-care products and certain baked goods. (NOTE: When brushing your pet's teeth, use toothpaste labeled for animal-use only.) Click here to read the rest of this article. |

Did you know that we are available for emergencies after hours? We offer this service to our clients only.
