Summer Is Finally Here

pets in airplaneIt was a long, cold, snowy winter.  But summer is finally here. This means road trips to the beach and mountains, or to visit family and friends.  It, also, means lots of hot sun and refreshing rain.  For many of us, our excursions will include our pets.  So for those of you sharing your summer fun with Spot or Fluffy, click here for some tips to help keep your pet safe and healthy.

Don't Let Your Pet End Up In The Lost & Found
Microchip Identification Could Save Your Pet's Life

Lost Cat PosterSummer is a great time to have your pet microchipped.  With the kids being home from school, neighbors coming for barbecues, family visiting, and just having the windows and doors open to let all that fresh air in, there's a greater chance that your pet could wander off and become lost.  According to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), of the 10 million pets that get lost each year, only 17% of the dogs and 2% of the cats are ever returned to their owners.  Proper identification, especially the pet microchip, can help keep your pet from becoming one of these tragic numbers.

In the fall of 2008, we ran the story of Charity, a dog whose life was saved because of a microchip.  It is an inspiring story and worth telling again.  Please click here to read about this remarkable dog, Charity.  Click here to learn more about microchipping of pets.

Disaster Preparedness for the Family Pet

You don't have to live in Florida, Kansas or California to be affected by disasters.  Disasters can happen at any place, at any time.  Locally, Frederick County annuallanimated tornadoy experiences the effects of hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and snow storms/blizzards.  With the many highways and rail lines that run through the county, there is always the chance that transportation accidents could occur which may require the evacuation of nearby homes and businesses.  When making your family's disaster preparedness plan, be sure to include your pets as well.  For information on developing a pet disaster preparedness plan, click here.
Book Recommendation
This is a book that several members of our clinic have passed around. We all loved it and thought that you might enjoy it as well!

modoc book cover"Modoc: The True Story of the Greatest Elephant That Ever Lived"
by Ralph Helfer

Modoc tells the heart-warming story of an incredible circus elephant with amazing abilities, and the intense bond that she shares with Bram, a young elephant trainer.  This book takes us on a journey through both of their lives including encounters with armed bandits, a shipwreck, and animal brutality but also gives us great insight into the unbelievably deep personality of one very special elephant.   Filled with both pulse-racing and tear-jerking moments, Modoc will captivate all its readers, animal-lovers or not.
