Hurray For Cooler Weather But...
|
|
Ah, beautiful Autumn! Crisp, cool days, falling leaves, pumpkin
pie ...ragweed. Ugh, fall allergies. Humans, cats, and dogs alike all suffer when
it comes to allergies. Some suffer from
spring/summer allergies, some summer/fall allergies and an unfortunate few have
the luck of suffering from year-round allergies.
Most allergies are easily managed with two
very common OTC anti-histamines - Benadryl and Chlortrimeton. But not all patients respond well with these
two drugs. To help these patients, we
recently added Hydroxyzine to our pharmacy inventory. Hydroxyzine is a prescription anti-histamine.
Why one pet responds better to one anti-histamine over another is unknown. If you've tried Benedryl and Chlortrimeton
and have found them to be less than satisfactory, it may be worthwhile to try
your pet on Hydroxyine. Ask about it next time you are in with your
pet.
In cases unresponsive to antihistamines, cortisone type drugs such as prednisolone may need to be prescribed. We may perform allergy testing and hyposensitization in cases of chronic/multiseasonal allergies.

Pets Need Dental Care Too
|
|
"Go brush your teeth Fluffy!" We wish it would be that
easy. Unfortunately, our pets rely on us
to ensure that their mouth stays healthy. If left untreated, dental disease can progress to a painful state where
it hurts too much to eat. Serious
infections can develop, resulting in abscesses, sinus infections, and teeth
falling out. There is also potential for
this infection to spread through the blood and affect other body systems.
We realize that many of our
patients aren't always the most cooperative and will not tolerate their owners
brushing their teeth, however, there are other things that can be done. Click here for our approach to dental care.

Book Recommendation
|
|
Here is another book that we passed around the clinic. We all loved it and hope that you will too!
"Merle's Door" by Ted Kerasote
 Both educational and
heartwarming, Merle's Door tells the true story of a free-spirited dog
and the relationship he develops with the man who rescued him from the
desert. Rather than training Merle and
acting as his master, Ted gives Merle the freedom to come and go as he pleases
and to think independently and they build a strong partnership based on mutual
trust and respect. Not only is it an
entertaining story, it gives interesting insight into dog behavior and makes
you re-think certain pre-conceived notions of dog behavior. |
