The vision

Doug Phillips, the founder of the San Antonio Independent Christian Film, wrote, "Henry Van Til correctly observed that "culture is religion externalized." By this, he meant that the culture of a people reflects their true religious priorities. The music, paintings, and film of a nation (not to mention the thousands of daily cultural expressions - how we live, eat, work, and entertain ourselves) express our priorities, our values, and our true faith.

film festival doug phillips

Doug Phillips, the founder, articulates the vision.

"The Bible teaches that all men have faith, in that they either worship the creature or they worship the Creator, but no man is free from religious commitment. When a people worship sensuality or embrace dark visions of reality, it is always evidenced in the arts. There is no neutrality! On the other hand, when a nation fears and loves the God of Holy Scripture, their religious commitment is evidenced in the music they play, the way they dress, and their vision of family life.

"The fact is that America is discontent with Hollywood's negative, monopolistic stranglehold on film and culture. The humanistic religious worldview of Hollywood elites created a rift in American culture and profoundly damaged the American family. We intend to respond, not by cursing the darkness, but by lighting candles. Building a community of independent Christian filmmakers is one such candle."

Read the rest of Doug's vision for supplanting Hollywood altogether.

THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO

*  The Chinese vice president visited President Obama at the White House yesterday. That shows how different China is from us. In China, the vice president is actually important.

*  President Obama may have significantly reduced our trade deficit with China. He sold the Chinese vice president a billion Jeremy Lin jerseys at $50 apiece.

*  The new sports phenom, New York Knicks' player Jeremy Lin, came off the bench and helped win six games including a last-second shot to defeat the Toronto Raptors. Where else but America can you drink a German beer and watch a Taiwanese basketball player on your Japanese TV beat a team from Canada?

*  Did you all have a nice Valentine's Day yesterday? Do you know how St. Valentine died? He was beheaded by the emperor Claudius - right after Claudius saw how much he was charging for a dozen roses.

*  The obesity rate among school kids has been on the rise. Schools are having to order special desks and seats for students who are particularly obese. Is exercise just out of the question now?

LATE NIGHT WITH JIMMY FALLON

*  After disputes over its nuclear program, Iran is threatening to stop exporting oil. Which means the U.S. may have to tap into its backup reserve: Mitt Romney's hair.

*  Today President Obama visited a factory in Wisconsin that brought back 100 jobs from China. It's got to be tough for the workers in China who lost those jobs - but kids always bounce back.

*  There's a new channel called DOG TV that offers 24 hours of programming to entertain dogs while their owners are gone. That's crazy. My dog doesn't want to watch TV - not when I just got him an iPad.

WHAT DO I DO WITH THE DUDES AT MY DOOR?

HOW TO WITNESS TO THE MORMON CULTISTS

We have all seen the billboards, TV commercials and news articles in the San Antonio area recently regarding Mormonism.

With the possibility of a Mormon President, more people than ever are interested in Mormonism. Is it just another denomination of Christianity or something entirely different?

Join Evidence Ministries to learn what Mormonism really teaches.

On Saturday, February 18th Keith Walker of Evidence Ministries will present a three-hour free seminar at Community Bible Church from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon entitled, "What Do I Do With The Dudes At My Door?"

Santorum: birth control harms women and society
For starters, does he realize that married women (men too!) use birth control? The impression that Santorum finds the prevalent practice of birth control "harmful to women" is, frankly, mind-numbing. As a young state senator 30 years ago, Paul Pfeifer helped write Ohio's death penalty law. Today, as the senior member of the state Supreme Court, he's trying to eliminate it.

It's not uncommon for sitting judges to change their mind on the death penalty - U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun famously said in 1994 he would no longer "tinker with the machinery of death" - but Pfeifer may be the only one to argue so ardently against a capital punishment law he himself created, and yet continue to rule on death penalty cases.

MAYA ANGELOU: 'BARACK OBAMA HAS DONE A REMARKABLE JOB'

There has always been something bittersweet about the life experience of Maya Angelou. Think of the literature fashioned from a harsh and tragic upbringing in racially segregated Missouri and Arkansas: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings; Wouldn't Take Nothing for my Journey Now.

OBAMA RIDES WEST AFTER POLL BOOST

President Barack Obama launched his latest cross-country trawl for campaign cash Wednesday at an auspicious moment -- as his approval rating hit the crucial 50 percent barrier in two new polls.

There were also signs that strengthening jobs growth and a quickening recovery were improving his standing in several key states the president will need to capture if he is to win reelection in November.

FORECLOSURES ON THE RISE AGAIN

After a year-long reprieve from rising foreclosures, the numbers are going up again.

One in every 624 U.S. households received a foreclosure filing in January, up 3 percent from the previous month, according to a new report from RealtyTrac. Foreclosure activity froze in many states in 2011, due to processing delays after fraud, or so-called "Robo-signing," were uncovered in the fall of 2010. The thaw is now on.

THE CAMPAIGN TO UNDERMINE MARCO RUBIO

There seems to be an orchestrated effort emerging to undermine Sen. Marco Rubio. At least, that's how it looks.

On the heels of that recent and terribly flawed Reuters story, there have been multiple other shots fired his direction. Some of this may simply speak to Rubio's level of activity and effectiveness. But the assault hardly seems organic.

REID: RUBIO 'SUPPOSEDLY' REPRESENTS HISPANICS

Sen. Marco Rubio isn't waiting for a vice presidential offer to go after President Barack Obama: He's been locked in a quiet battle with the White House for months, blocking key diplomatic appointments in hopes of getting his say on foreign policy.

The Rubio-Obama administration skirmish - sloppy, confusing and still largely unresolved - could presage an even bigger, sloppier and more confusing Rubio-Obama political battle this fall.

AL GORE TAKES AIM AT "UNSUSTAINABLE" CAPITALISM

Together with David Blood, senior partner of 'green' fund firm Generation Investment Management, the environmental activist has crafted a blueprint for "sustainable capitalism" he wants the financial industry to adopt to support lasting economic growth.

GOP TRIES RARE TACTIC TO BLOCK OBAMA RULES

Republicans in Congress launched bids Thursday to nullify Obama administration rules that would speed up union elections and set the first national air pollution standards for toxic mercury pollution from the nation's power plants.

The rarely used tactic, known as a resolution of disapproval, requires a simple majority for passage. Both have only a small chance of clearing the Senate, but a vote would force some Democrats to take a public stand on two volatile issues in an election year.

MAN SAYS ENOUGH POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

Veteran South Florida lawyer Peter Feaman was listening to a pastor speak about the Quran at a Rotary Club meeting more than six years ago when his world was rattled.

"The presentation was so negative," Feaman told WND, "that I didn't believe him."

"I had been told that Islam was a religion of peace, by our president among others," he said referring to George W. Bush. "So I started to do my own research. And as I got into it, it was like, 'Holy cow, this is nothing like I've been told, either by the mainstream media or by college and university.'"

BLACK LIBERALS SHOULD BE ASHAMED

As we know, it is liberals' proclivity for projection that compels black liberals to deride conservatives of color as sellouts, Uncle Toms and things of this nature, when it is they who are acceding to the dominion of progressive overlords and advancing that cause. Among the progressive overlords are factions that not only are conspiring to compromise black Americans socially, culturally and economically, but which would have kept blacks in the back of the bus and drinking from their own water fountains had they been able to maintain the status quo in segregated America.

Yet, black liberals - prominent ones, more especially - continue to advance the socialist doctrine of their overseers, with relish and most vociferously, to be sure. Some have taken it to a high art, while others rail as inarticulately as severe brain injury patients, astonishing us with the fact that they have not only gained employment doing so, but made lucrative careers out of deceiving their fellow Americans of high melanin content.
