Dear Knitters and Kumihimo-ists!

Karen

Hello,
It has been another very busy month! I couldn't believe it when I heard that we had officially reached the start of the 50 days to Christmas countdown! And that was a week ago! Where does the time go?

With the holidays and the gift-giving season approaching, I encourage you to take a look at your Kumihimo supplies and stock up. I don't know of anyone that wouldn't be delighted to receive a beautiful, handmade Kumihimo necklace, bracelet, etc. Whether you embellish with beads or simply make a gorgeous braid, it is sure to be appreciated. Kumihimo Disk Kits also make great gifts. Just think about how much you enjoy Kumihimo and you probably know others that would love it too!

Our next Kumi-gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, November 15th. Mark your calendars. Our Kumi-group meets the third Tuesday of the month. Many of us did not know each other at the beginning and we have now created some nice friendships. I encourage you to get together with other Kumihimo braiders in your neighborhood. It's good fun!

Happy Braiding and Knitting - Karen

P.S. If you want to share your Kumihimo creations please feel free to email me  photos. Photos seem to work best that are taken on a white background. Include a list of the materials you used and share some brief instructions.  Thank you!     Email Karen

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Kumihimo Week - Fort Bragg, CA
Hen House Studio
Our Kumihimo Workshop
Hen House Studio, Fort Bragg

I had an amazing experience this month. I had signed up to take a week long Kumihimo workshop in Fort Bragg, CA to be taught by Rodrick Owen. At the last minute, he was not able to make it and instead of canceling the class, the woman hosting the workshop, Jackie Wollenberg, invited all of us to come anyway.

I have to admit, I am very comfortable staying closer to home and when the class was cancelled, although I was disappointed, I was also a little relieved. After all, I didn't know anyone taking the class and it was a bit of a journey from my home. To make a long story short, I loaded up my stuff and safely secured my Marudai into the back seat of my car and I went. And I am so glad that I did.

I had the absolute best time and met some very wonderful women. It could not have been a better week. We braided in
a wonderful studio, shared ideas and experiences and ate alot of really good food. I am SO glad that I ventured out of my comfort zone. This was an experience not to be missed. Thank you Jackie, Gin, Laine, Val and Constance! Kumihimo has been very special for me as it has brought alot of very incredible people and experiences into my life

Kumihimo "Artist" Showcase - Barbara Hartley
Barbara Hartley (Truckee, CA)

Holiday Sparkle - White Petite Satin

Silver Lined Clear Toho Seed Beads

Barb lives in Truckee and is one of the creative forces in our monthly Kumi-group. She has a knack for color and a real talent for putting fun things together. I went by her house to pick up one Kumihimo necklace and I ended up leaving with four. They are all so beautiful and I wanted to share them with you. Thanks Barb!

Barb's work is a great example of "less is more". She keeps things simple and the outcome is fantastic. For example, all of her necklaces featured in this newsletter are made with one color of cord and one color of beads. And the look is classy.

Fun Finishing Trick....

Cubes and Tails

This is another necklace that I borrowed from Barb's stash. It's beautiful. She used purple petite satin cord, purple C-Lon with a spiral of Matte Black AB cube beads. What I like is the subtle purple satin cord color that peeks out between the cube beads.

The other creative touch that I love is the way Barb finished the ends. Instead of cutting the satin tails she embellished them with beads and left them as decorative tails at the close of the necklace. A simple surprise that looks great.

Materials:

1 - spool Purple C-Lon $4.50 (you'll have plenty for another project)
1 - pkg Purple Petite Satin $3.00
3 - tubes Matte Black AB Cube Beads $2.75 ea
2 - Barrel Beads $0.40 ea
1 - 6 mm End Cap with Magnetic Closure $2.85
Color A: 4 strands (Purple Petite Satin)
Color B: 4 strands (Purple C-Lon)
Set up: Color A in N & S positions; (32,1),  (16,17) . Color B in E & W positions (8,9),(24,25) with cube beads added on E & W (C-Lon) pairs.
Movement: Left bottom up, right top down, clockwise 1/4 turn; repeat.
How to: Barb braided 2 1/2" with C-Lon/ Satin cords and then dropped a bead with each movement for 15". Next she braided with C-Lon/satin cords for 2 1/2". She finished the ends with silver colored end caps with magnetic closures. .*Beads required depends on your length. If you want to add tails, consider that when determining the length to cut your threads.
