Dear Knitters and Kumihimo-ists!

Karen

Hello,
Brrrr! It's getting colder and we are closing in on the next season! The Aspens and Maples in my yard are changing colors and we've even had our first snow. It wasn't just a flurry - we got at least 6" at my house and it stayed with us for several days. Happily, I can report that it's just about melted. I am a skier but I'm not ready yet. The cold weather does give the gentle nudge and reminder that the holidays are just around the corner.

During the month I receive all sorts of photos of the things that all of you create. It truly makes my day when I open an email and see your beautiful creations. I love it. This month I have included a section, Ideas & Inspiration, showing off your contributions. Get inspired! And don't forget the Kumihimo Gallery (I just added new stuff).

The Kit of the Month is a Kumihimo Candy Cane Ornament. I made one last year for my book club ornament exchange and after many requests, here it is! See details below. This is fun and easy.

.

Our next Kumi-gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, October 18th. Mark your calendars. This is always a fun evening. I look forward to seeing all of you that can make it and please bring whatever you are working on!  I encourage all of you, that live too far away to join our group, to start your own Kumi-gatherings.

Happy Braiding and Knitting - Karen

P.S. If you want to share your Kumihimo creations please feel free to email me  photos. Photos seem to work best that are taken on a white background. Include a list of the materials you used and share some brief instructions.  Thank you!     Email Karen

Kumihimo "Artist" Showcase - Suanough Zentell

Peruvian Pendant by Suanough Zentell (Houston, Texas)Peruvian Plate Necklace

The artist of the month is, Suanough Zentell. She is a retired Aerospace Graphic Artist, originally from California, who didn't get enough personal art time until she retired in 2000. She dabbles in chain maille, ceramics, stained glass, weaving, and beadwork. Now she combines her love of beading with her fascination for Kumihimo. She says that she just recently started adding "eye candy" to her braids and the results have been fun. The featured piece is a  Peruvian Pendant cleverly attached to a Kumihimo braid. The bail and the closure are both done in peyote stitch. She wanted to cover the magnetic end caps and came up with, what she calls, a simple solution; a peyote tube that slides over the end caps and, voila, covered closures. Beautiful!

Kit of the Month - Candy Cane Ornament

Candy Canes
Kumihimo Candy Canes - 12 Strand Braid with Core
(candy cane braided stick 9"; with bend 6 1/2" + tassels)

The first time I made Kumihimo Candy Canes was for an ornament exchange in my book club. Since then I have had many requests to put together a kit. The ingredients are simple and the results are great. Once you've made a few, you can decide how you want to embellish your candy canes, i.e. add beads, little jingle bells, bows, etc. I'm giving you a start on the basics and I hope you add your own creative touches. Have fun!

The Kumihimo Candy Cane Kit contains enough materials to make 3 candy canes. The candy cane stick measures 9" and when shaped into a candy cane with
the finished length is about 6 1/2".

With this class-in-a-kit, you'll learn how to start your braid with a Lark's Head Knot, braid around a core (in this case a wire stem) and you'll learn a versatile wrapping technique to finish off the tassel.

Kit includes:

- 30 yards of "Petite" Satin Cord; Red, Green and White

- Three 9" wire stem cores

- Instructions with lots of step-by-step color photos
- Patterns for 3 different 12 Strand Spiral Braids

Cost: $14.00 Kit (makes 3 candy canes)   Click here to see all Kumihimo Kits.
