Then He opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures. Luke 24:45
A new year has begun and many of us at this time make resolutions or set goals we want to achieve during the next 365 days. Understanding the scriptures is a worthy goal for any person who considers themselves a spiritual seeker. In my opinion, this takes more than just a commitment to read a designated portion of the Bible every day. In order to truly understand, we must decide that as we read, we will also keep our minds open, perhaps to a different perspective of scripture than we have ever seen before, and give ourselves the time and freedom to process and digest these new perspectives.
It is my personal belief that eternal truth cannot be completely contained in, nor confined to any singular book, concept, or even religion. God has continually revealed unchanging truth throughout the ages. Each one of our individual journeys is both sacred and spiritual. We all progress at our own pace and evolve in our own space. And sometimes our journey leads us to as many questions as it does to answers.
I would encourage you this year not to be afraid of the questions you notice coming into your heart and mind. They are there for a reason... to bring you to a higher level of consciousness. It is improbable, and perhaps even impossible for us all to be on the exact same page theologically. However, it is possible to value the perspective of others, and it is healthy to allow iron to sharpen iron.
Here are two little affirmations, one an invitation and one a prayer, that I have started saying daily to help me in my quest to understand scripture. Perhaps they will be helpful to you during the coming year as well.
INVITATION OF TRUTH
My mind is alert and my Spirit is open to receive truth. I acknowledge that Truth is not reserved only to what I already know and is not merely restricted to
concepts with which I am already familiar. As beauty is in the eye of the beholder - Truth is in the ear, heart and mind of the perceiver.
PRAYER OF SURRENDER
Spirit of Truth, CARRY me where You will; BRING to me what You will; TAKE from me what You will... I am surrendered. Amen.
