Support our Students
It takes more than a traditional high school budget to help our students engineer their futures.

We need to invest in our world class machine shop, college- and career-prep program, and work-based projects and activities.

For example, APA has a SkillsUSA chapter in which students meet weekly to work on school and community leadership projects, attend regional and state conferences to participate in job skill competitions.

Please help by sending us a check, payable to the Center for Labor and
Community Research, at 3411 West Diversey, Suite 10, Chicago, Illinois 60647.

APA in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and Chicago Tonight

What do Chicago Tonight, The New York Times, and the Chicago Tribune have in common? They all featured great stories about Austin Polytech in October.

On October 14, WTTW's acclaimed current affairs show, Chicago Tonight, aired a segment about Austin Polytech by Chicago News Cooperative reporter Ash-har Quraishi.

APA Press

The segment complemented a New York Times feature on APA, the first in a series of articles by Chicago News Cooperative reporter Meribah Knight, who will follow two seniors and one junior throughout the year.

A week later, the Chicago Tribune profiled Austin Polytech as part of the Holiday Giving campaign by Chicago Tribune Charities, a McCormick Foundation Fund.

Mr. Mac credits APA's math excellence to the school's interactive curriculum that applies math to real-world engineering and shop situations and, most importantly, to the hard work of APAstudents.
APA students tour UIC campus |
by APA junior Torres Hughes

On October 27, 2010, 18 Austin Polytech students went to University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). It was a GREAT trip. Students were able to take a tour of UIC's tallest building, which is twenty eight stories tall. This is where the President and the Board of Trustees meeting room is located. Students went to the 28th floor, took pictures, and lounged around the huge building.

UIC

Our tour guide was Dr. G,a professor at UIC who teaches Intro to Electrical Engineering. We shadowed Dr. G. and sat in on a class and took notes as he gave his lecture.  We also joined in on a few active classes, including the largest class which held 400 students. The college students sat quietly as the professor gave her lecture; after the class was over, students were able to walk around this class too!

After shadowing Dr. G, we went to lunch waited in line with UIC students, swiped our passes and picked out our lunch from a buffet. After lunch we went to UIC's Electronics Visualization Laboratory (EVL). Dr. Andrew Johnson gave us a brief description about the laboratory. We found out that the lab was founded in 1973 and Jason Leigh is the current director. The lab supports about 18 graduate students and 6 undergraduate students. The lab researches advanced display systems, visualization systems, high speed networking and more. This gave students an example of what a particular day at college would be like. Everyone enjoyed the trip and especially the food. We can't wait to the next trip that is in store for us!
