Manufacturers Share their Knowledge with APA Teachers
APA teachers and Teacher Manufacturing Mentors (TMMs) from 15 partner companies paired up at the TMM orientation last month to discuss lesson plans for APA's first semester.

The team's goal was to bring concreteness to classroom material by using examples from real-life situations in the manufacturing business.

After an initial meeting in the library, each teacher brought their TMM into their classroom, where the pair brainstormed some plans and returned to the library for a "sharing session."

An additional dozen TMMs have signed up, and their guidance will become instrumental as the school year progresses.
APA Team Meets with Mayor Daley
APA partner Joan Wrenn of Hudson Precision played a key part on the team that met with Mayor Daley last month to discuss APA's achievements, long-term mission, and partnerships with  advanced manufacturers.

Mayor Daley mentioned the gap of understanding between educators and manufacturers, presenting an opportunity to mention APA's TMM program -- "a good idea," according to the mayor.

Other members of the delegation included APA Principal Bill Gerstein, APA Founder Dan Swinney, WaterSaver Faucet President Steve Kersten, APA Industrial Coordinator Bill Vogel, and CPS Chief Education Officer Barbara Eason-Watkins.

At a subsequent meeting with Ms. Eason-Watkins, Joan Wrenn and Dan Swinney discussed in greater detail APA's need for an additional NIMS instructor in order to achieve our credentialing goals. The team secured an agreement with Ms. Eason-Watkins to support APA's objective.
APA Coffee Cafe Expands Business in Austin
Currently working with APA Junior Charmaine
Simmons
and Sophomore Joselyn Broadway, Dr. George Cole has been providing premium brewed coffee to the Austin Polytech campus from 7:00am to 8:00am every schoolday -- as well as teaching Charmaine and Joselyn sound business principles.

Charmaine and Joselyn have been getting up at 5:00 every morning to meet Dr. Cole and prepare the coffee "brew of the day." After obtaining a long range contract, the APA Coffee Cafe has recently expanded their services to the health clinic.

Now the team aspires to open their high-quality products and services to the Austin community at large. In their first effort, the Coffee Cafe set up shop at the Chicago Police Department facility at Madison and Central, where Sgt. Glenn White (an 18-year veteran of the police force) sampled the students' brew and declared it "very tasty!"

Under Dr. Cole's direction, the Coffee Cafe is developing further plans for expansion.
