About Austin Polytechnical Academy
Austin Polytechnical Academy (APA) is a small public high school in Chicago's West Side neighborhood of Austin. APA's mission is to educate the next generation of leaders in advanced manufacturing.

What makes APA different?

Our company partners help provide students with mentoring, work-based projects, and paid summer jobs and internships.

Our machine shop will allow every student to graduate with at least two industry-recognized NIMS certifications.

Our rigorous manufacturing-focused pre-engineering curriculum puts students on track to graduate ready for college and exciting careers in manufacturing that offer competitive pay, generous benefits, and ample opportunities for career advancement.

There is an old adage that states,"it takes one to know one" -- or in our case, "it takes a partner to find a partner." Austin Polytech needs your help to identify companies that will make good partners for the school.  Do you know of another company making innovative use of technology to design and manufacture complex products, who believes in being in business for the long term, who is interested in finding and nurturing new talent? If so, please let me know. Together, we can expand our network to provide the highest quality career education for our students.

Also, the new machine shop project will be at the center of the discussion at our Advisory Committee meeting tomorrow. We will review the shop design and the list of proposed equipment. We need your input so we would like as many partners as possible to attend because the committee will vote whether or not to approve the project.

Advisory Committee Meeting and Assembly Tomorrow
Please join us for the next Advisory Committee meeting:

Tomorrow, Thursday, May 21st
12:00 PM to 1:30 PM

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin Visits Austin Polytech
Sen. Durbin at APAU.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) paid a visit to Austin Polytech last Friday, April 24th, less than a week after Illinois was approved for $1.4 billion in education funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

During his visit, Sen. Durbin enjoyed a cup of coffee prepared especially for him by a group of students who own and operate a coffee business. The students grind, brew, and sell the coffee as part of APA's entrepreneurship program. "We sell at least 25 or 30 cups a day," says APA student Kededra Murph. Sen. Durbin bought his own cup at full price -- $1. Learn more, watch video, and view photos
APA Kicks Off Job Shadowing Pilot Program
Job ShadowingSeven APA students are leading the way to help us develop APA's Career Program by participating in our very first effort to organize job shadow opportunities for our students. Nikita Burnet, Gregory Butler, Arenique Green, Alisha Johnson, Teira Sandifer, Brittany Trotter and Latrice Tynes have already visited one of our participating partners on two separate visits to get an in-depth perspective on what its like to run and work for a small manufacturing company using top-of-the-line technology to make high precision products.
