the Word from the Herd thanks for the Healing Touch...
 | |
Jane named Domino her new poster child for Relaxation Response.
|
On 10/9 some of us (Beauford, Beggar, Carly, Charlie, CJ, Cosmo, Domino, Goodie, JB & Vogue) volunteered for the Healing Touch workshop & we'd like to thank Jane & her 20 students for the experience. They practiced holistic techniques that support our health & well-being. The relaxation, among other benefits, releases endorphins & other responses to promote healing & support the immune system. Plus, well, it was fun. Following the workshop, instructors & riding students commented that the horses were even more responsive, attentive, & cooperative. Karen commented that "The Healing Touch Workshop was amazing & incredible." The Healing Touch program will be back in Raleigh (& at MacNair's for the horse session) on 3/30 to 4/1, 2012. Did you know?

Horses are very social animals & much prefer living in groups to being solitary (unless they are mares named Crystal.) Horse herds have a clear hierarchy; the "Alpha" horse is the one in charge. When a new horse is added to the group, the entire herd's chain of command needs to be re-ordered. This is accomplished mostly through body language, which we can learn & use to our advantage in communicating with our horses.
Horses are very capable of forming attachments to other animals, whether they are other horses or members of a different species (Lucky for us!)

Dear Friends of MacNair's,
Some of you may be receiving our monthly Newsletter for the first time this month. Welcome! We will understand, though, if you feel your inbox is already too full. To opt out, scroll all the way to the bottom of the Newsletter where it says SafeUnsubscribe & click. (But we hope you enjoy it enough that you won't!) Horse events, being mostly outdoors, are often subjected to such things as rain, snow, sleet, hail, famine & pestilence. Okay, maybe not the last couple. We wish we were in charge of all that but the best we can do is have you check our Facebook page or website for updates if the weather turns iffy. Picture this. It's the day after Thanksgiving. You've been in the house a lot, probably with a plenty of relatives, food & football which were all undoubtedly wonderful. However, wouldn't it also be great to have some quality time outside with your horse? If you're not a rider, the trails will be open for hiking after the last horses go out. Hunter Pace 11/25. (Last one this year.) Speaking of "last one this year," the 2011 Triangle Jumper Series hosted by Summit Hill & yours truly, concludes with a show at MacNair's on 11/19. If you have been accumulating points, Year-End Awards will be givien out at this show. Remember you have to attend four shows to be eligible. So now we have lights in the outside ring at Country Acres! The shorter daylight hours & the time change means we will get to see them all lit up soon enough. Jill & Michael, our loss is Washington's gain. Have fun at the Seattle Rain Festival, Jan 1 to Dec 31. Nancy

Getting to know us
this month... Mattie When you're not around horses what do you like to do? I like to get together with friends or work in my yard & encourage my dogs to chase squirrels. I hate squirrels. Pets? two dogs & some pond fish What's the last thing you accomplished with a horse that you were really proud of? Jumping 3 feet with my horse, Handsome. When teaching lessons, what do find yourself repeating? "Look where you're going; Heels down, shoulders back; Organize your reins; Ride into the corners." (This is occasionally one long, loud phrase.) Favorite TV show? Hell's Kitchen, Master Chef, anything with Gordon Ramsey, Modern Family Favorite snack? cookies &, of course, chocolate What do you think is important for your students to know? That when riders learn to control themselves, they'll be able to control their horses. If you couldn't work with horses what would be your dream job? Work full time in my yard & travel. That would be a "job", right?

the Riding School
 | figuring out "put your foot in the stirrup"
|
From 11/23-26 there will be no group classes. The horses are going to their grandmother's houses for pumpkin pie.
Cloverbuds meet on 11/12. They will be finding out why horses are always hungry & other weird things abut the inner workings of a horse. They'll also learn some basic first aid for horses & how to tell when they don't feel well. Hint: it's not by pulling the covers over their heads & saying, "Mom, I can't go to school today."
Riding School students (with approval from their instructor) can lease a school horse ($65) to ride in the Nov. Hunter Pace. You MUST pre-enter...NOT KIDDING! Entry fee is discounted for students - call the office. 919-851-1118
Next Pony School Clinics will be 11/5 & 11/11. Since there is no school on 11/11 it's a Half-Day Clinic from 9-12:30. Remember to bring a lunch.
New face in the Riding School...Caramel. Stop by & say hi. He's at Country Acres.

NC Horse Council
The North Carolina Horse Council is a non-profit organization formed in 1972 by a group of concerned horse owners in Raleigh NC, to represent and further the common interests of the equine community throughout North Carolina. Today the NCHC provides wonderful educational opportunities for equestrians as well as very practical and useful information on its website and through its staff. The NCHC also lobbies for beneficial changes in state and local laws that affect any facet of the horse industry, whether local kids at riding stables like MacNair's or national companies interested in building equine centered businesses in NC. There are many different programs and opportunities provided by the NCHC. Membership is only $12 a year but the information on the website and many of the programs are free to the public. One upcoming item of interest is the North Carolina Horse Council's annual Southern Horse Festival in Williamston, North Carolina on 11/12 & 13 at the Martin County Agricultural Center (same place where the EHA shows are held) and there will be showing in three rings plus an exciting trail horse challenge course! One ring will be for Quarter Horses only, one open show available to anyone, any age, any breed and one that will be the familiar NCDCTA show that is oftentimes held at MacNair's. If you'd like to enter or just be a spectator, or would like more information click this link: Southern Horse Festival |
A Couple Reminders... for November
Shows this month at MCA: Triangle Jumper Series on 11/19 & NCDCTA on 11/20. Also, the Hunter Pace on 11/25. The Triangle Jumper Series show is the last one - Year-End Awards will be given out. Overnight stabling is available (in case you want to do the NCDCTA show the next day, for instance.)
Cooler weather is here: Don't look out the window & assume it's nice just because it's sunny. It's time to find those warm riding gloves you threw in the back of the closet last spring. Think layers, people!
MCA Activities: You can get more information on clinics & programs here... Programs
It's that time of year: leaves are turning colors...days are getting cooler & shorter...your horse is growing a coat that rivals a yak's. Yay for body clipping! Make sure you have your horse's winter wardrobe ready & give Celena a call to get on her schedule. 919-818-8921 | | Celena can fix this. |
Dena's Words of Blanketing Wisdom: less is more! A sweaty horse is a chilled, miserable horse. Don't over-do!
If you haven't yet filled out a blanket card, they are on Dena's desk.
Public Service Announcement: It's that time of year - your house is bustling with family & friends. And they are all looking at your towels. "Oh no!" (you think) "I've been meaning to replace those frayed, worn out, stained or ripped towels!" And yet you want the old ones to have a good home. Well, we can help you out. Drop them in the lounge or office at Country Acres & know they will be treasured always. Green horse spit is a sign of love.

| Wildlife Watch

Hard to believe, but in the early 20th century Canada Geese were considered endangered. As you may have noticed, since then they've made a dramatic comeback. The Triangle is one of the areas where Canada Geese now live year-round, choosing not to migrate as they used to do. These birds have a lifespan of 10 to 24 years & will protect a territory. If they hiss at you, run away!

Horses must be counted among our many blessings. They enrich our lives in so many ways - what would we do with out them? (Wither away, I suspect.) We love hearing from you. Please take a few minutes to tell us - what's on your mind? Feel free to post on our Facebook page! (It may show up here, too.)
Sincerely,
the Staff at MacNair's Country Acres
P.S. If you've never experienced autumn at MacNair's, make a cup of tea, carve out about five minutes & take A Walk Around the Farm - guaranteed to lower your blood pressure.
