At the Spanish Riding School (the oldest riding academy in the world) "novice" riders are kept on a lunge line with no reins or stirrups for years. Only then are they allowed the privilege of touching a Lipizzaner's reins and putting their feet in stirrups. This is to teach "a balanced and independent seat." After that, imagine how much control you would have over your aids!
"Improving the riders' tone and feel for the correct position is an essential part of the first two years' training at the Spanish Riding School, Vienna."
Julie Garnett can not only save you the price of a ticket to Austria but she won't make you wear the funny hat. Julie is starting a series of lunging clinics to help riders of any age improve their positions. Someone else directing your horse frees you to focus on your position. Lunging improves your balance and seat, increasing your communication with your horse. Your aids become more specific and precise, in short - more effective, whether for jumping or dressage. Our goal is quiet and precise control. And we'll have some fun, too.
If you think lunging only improves the horse, think again. It does wonders for riders, even those not planning on Airs Above the Ground.
Lunge Lesson
Lessons are customized for riders of any age, Pony School through show riders, dressage or forward seat - you will benefit.
The lesson begins with an evaluation of the rider's position.
The rider is then put on a lunge line and given a series of exercises that will strengthen weak areas. No matter what your current riding level is, this helps awareness of aids.
Lessons are 45 minutes. Julie feels that riders gain the most when they have lunge lessons in a series of three (hence the reduced price.) But even one lunge lesson will advance your riding position.
If your horse knows how to lunge, s/he can join the lesson, if not we can provide a school horse. When you register, please let us know if you would like to use one of our horses.
