| EdGE Begins STEM Project |
 | | Milbridge EdGE student, Emily Reynolds, thoughtfully studies her "edible DNA project". |
EdGE received a STEM grant from the Department of Education and will pilot this program in Harrington and Milbridge this year. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
EdGE staff and MSAD 37 teachers worked together, with input from parents and students, to create high interest hands-on activities that align with school curriculum. STEM gives students the opportunity to receive in-school credit for activities done at EdGE. Each school offers these activities to 6th - 8th grade students, two days per week. The early results are positive with teachers and students excited about the learning taking place. EdGE STEM project curriculum can be found on the MSAD 37 website at www.msad37.org. Back To Top |

The EdGE Program Completes its 10th Year of Summer Camps
|
 | | EdGE students enjoy the end of year party. |
During the month of July, 135 students attended summer camps in Cherryfield at the Ed Greaves Education Center. Four weeks of camps were held, with six or seven camps offered each week, for a total of 26 separate camp offerings. Each camp typically enrolls 12 to 15 students and there were 285 enrollment slots filled over the summer. Ten years ago, the EdGE program completed its first summer camp experience which included two camp offerings with 26 enrollment slots filled.
Some of this year's camps included: 3D Art Camp, Passport to Mexico, Nature Discovery, Adventures in Technology, Lego Robotics, River Meets the Sea, Born to Ride, HAPY (Healthy Active Proud Youth) camp, Color My World, Sports of All Sorts, and Storm the Castle. During the 'Commotion in the Ocean' camp, campers traveled aboard Sunbeam V and visited the outlying islands of Frenchboro, Isle au Haut, and Matinicus. EdGE campers also benefited from the expertise of EdGE program partners. Dorice Timko from the University of Maine's Cooperative Extension and Deidre Whitehead from the Maine Coast Heritage Trust visited camps and taught lessons to students.

| EdGE Traveled to Mount Desert Island for Summer Overnight Camps |
 | | EdGE students kayak along side of the Sunbeam V on a gorgeous summer day during Kayak Overnight camp. |
This summer, students took part in two different overnight camping experiences on Mount Desert Island. Both camps included three nights at the Hadley's Point campground.
The first camp, comprised of 4th - 6th grade students, spent the week biking on carriage trails and hiking up mountain paths in Acadia National Park. For several of the students, this was their first trip away from home. EdGE staff leaders, Isaac Marnik, Harry Thompson, and Emmy Kelley, lead this outdoor adventure.
The second camp, comprised of 7th and 8th graders, spent the week hiking and kayaking scenic shores in the region. They kayaked in Somes Sound, near Hadley's Point, and around Bar Island off the coast of Bar Harbor. They also enjoyed watching the sunset from the top of Cadillac Mountain, the surf and sun at Sand Beach, and s'mores around the campfire at the end of a busy day. Charlie Harrington, Director of EdGE, and staff, Isaac Marnik, Harry Thompson, and Emily Rathbun led this group.

| Upcoming Events | |
The EdGE Program will celebrate the beginning of its 10th year with "Lights On" celebrations at each of its eight elementary school sites during the month of November. "Lights On" is a national movement among 21st Century funded afterschool programs which celebrates "the lights being on afterschool" because students are staying afterschool to enjoy quality afterschool programming that EdGE provides. |
