Islesford Opens New Health Clinic
|
 | |
During the open house demonstration, Mission's Health Aide, Katlyn Damon, shines the otoscope into the ear of Islesboro resident, Anna Fernald.
|
The Islesford Health Clinic held its grand opening on September 27. The health center is located in the island's Neighborhood House in a room called, 'The Ladies' Parlor'. During the Open House, guests enjoyed demonstrations of telemedicine equipment such as the high magnification camera, the otoscope, and the stethoscope.
The Maine Sea Coast Mission provided the telemedicine equipment and also employ two health aides, Melissa Amuso and Katelyn Damon, who will work with the Mission's Director of Island Health Services, Sharon Daley. The health aides have been trained to operate the telemedicine equipment so that islanders can have access to a wide range of health care professionals for primary care, behavioral health, and education. Islanders will save money (ferry cost) and time by using telemedicine for appointments and follow-up appointments. The clinic began accepting patients on September 27, after the open house. EdGE Honors Connie Greaves Bates
|
 | |
Connie Greaves Bates, Wendy and Charlie Harrington, and Linda Thompson, Board Member
|
Over 50 EdGE supporters gathered at the Ed Greaves Education Center in Cherryfield on September 22 to honor Connie Greaves Bates for her steadfast support of the EdGE. Scott Planting, Executive Director, said the EdGE is a quality after school and summer program that gives all children access to education, has competent and caring staff, treats children with kindness, and provides opportunities for choice and teamwork. Connie Greaves Bates, wife of Ed Greaves for which the EdGE was named, said, "Ed would be amazed, pleased, and so proud that EdGE is beginning its 10th year. He held a concern for the youth of Washington County, and realized that besides sports, there were not many other afterschool offerings. He saw this as a missed opportunity for raising aspirations for our young people. He knew that through a program such as EdGE, students could improve their academics through experiential learning and could become better community citizens through leadership training and mentoring programs." Charlie Harrington, Director of EdGE, recognized the EdGE staff including local teachers for their strong dedication, hard work, and for making this program a success. He thanked Connie Greaves Bates for her support of the program, her generosity, and continued interest in the EdGE program. The Mission honored Connie by presenting a kayak with 'Greaves Bates' and the EdGE logo painted on its bow. The kayak will be used by the EdGE students and will be a constant reminder of Connie's steadfast support of the EdGE program. Back to Top |

The team sponsored by Jasper Wyman & Son captured the 7th annual EdGE Open Tennis Tournament at the Causeway Club on September 9. They defeated last year's semi finalist, Small Animal Clinic, by the score of 17 games to 15 games. This annual tennis tournament supports the Mission's EdGE program.
The two other semi-finalists were teams sponsored by Machias Business Group and Stanley Subaru, last year's champion. There were very competitive matches played throughout the day. The teams sponsored by Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, Dead River Company, Machias Savings Bank, and R.H. Foster all played excellent matches with close games being the order of the day.
Tournament Director, Larry Hudgens, commented that: "All 64 players had fun playing in this tournament which is for the benefit of the Mission's EdGE program. The EdGE is so important for the lives of many children in Eastern Maine." He encouraged all the players in the tournament to visit the EdGE in the next year and see the staff and programs in action.
The EdGE Open was once again held at the Causeway Club in Southwest Harbor which donated the use of its courts for this event. While the tournament is played in Southwest Harbor, the tournament sponsors and players participating come from throughout eastern Maine, including the Bangor area, Machias, Ellsworth, Mount Desert Island, and other Downeast Maine communities. Hannaford, Somesville Subway, and Dead River Convenience Store donated a variety of food and beverages in support of this event. Back to Top
