2011 Annual Meeting

The 106th Annual Meeting of the Maine Sea Coast Mission was held on July 13, 2011, on the Mission's back lawn overlooking beautiful Frenchman's Bay. Jim Geary, Treasurer, reported that the Mission is in excellent financial shape. He noted that the Mission's endowment grew by 13 percent in the past year.
Gavin Watson, new Board President, honored Lee Judd, outgoing Board President, for his many years of service to the Mission and for his consistent support and encouragement.
In both the opening prayer and his remarks, Rev. Planting thanked the many staff people who have not only supported him during his first year, but also for showing him how the various mission programs work and how successful and essential these programs are. Scott said, "I've spent most of my first year as Executive Director witnessing the works of the Mission in action. The EdGE has a profound influence on both children and their youth leaders in the schools. Rob Benson, Pastor to the Outer Islands, and Sharon Daley, Director of Health Services, know everyone on the islands because they show up on the Sunbeam. They've invested themselves and are trusted. Seniors come to a coffee house at the Downeast Campus because they know they are welcome, acknowledged and respected."
The principle speaker at the meeting was Judy Magliane who talked about how assistance from the Mission impacted her life and career. "Each time I came to the Maine Sea Coast Mission, they revived my spirit and faith and helped me believe in myself." She urged those attending the meeting to support the Mission's many programs through donations or volunteering.

Mission Awards Over $100,000 in Scholarships
|
 | | Mission Scholars and Board Members at the 2011 Scholars' Picnic |
 | Nancy Ho, Chair of the Mission's Scholarship Committee presents a scholarship check to Ridge Jordan from Ellsworth High School. |
On July 15, 2011 at the Maine Sea Coast Mission's Scholars Picnic, Scott Planting, Executive Director, announced that the Mission was continuing its long tradition of investing in the future of Maine's youth. He stated that college scholarships are provided to students who show academic promise and have financial need. In 2011 the Mission awarded 113 scholarships of $1,000 each to students from coastal and island communities in Downeast Maine.
The Mission scholarships are renewable for four years of college as long as the student remains in good standing. This year, 61 of the Mission scholarships went to students who are continuing their education. While 85 of the recipients will attend colleges in Maine, the remaining recipients will attend 25 colleges and universities throughout the United States.
Over 175 students and family members attended this year's Mission Scholars Picnic at the Colket Center in Bar Harbor. The guest speaker was Judy Magliane who was a scholarship recipient in 2002 and 2003. She obtained her BA in Mathematics and is currently employed by Kellogg's as a district manager in South Carolina. She spoke about the important role that the Mission scholarship played in helping her complete college and obtain a good job where she is excelling. She advised the students to: "Get up and get moving because today can be the turning point." She also told the students to "Always keep moving forward and don't let setbacks become your identity."
Members of the Board of Directors of the Maine Sea Coast Mission provided each student attending the picnic with their scholarship check.
