EdGE Students are Rewarded with a

Trip to Washington, D.C.

Washington D.C. Trip

EdGE students rest weary feet at the

Arlington National Cemetery Visitor's Center.

On April 14, EdGE participants traveled to Washington D.C. for a five day trip. Students who worked 40 hours for the EdGE Program or the mentoring program at Narraguagus High School were rewarded with this experience.

The students visited the Smithsonian's many museums, National Zoo, Botanical Gardens, National Gallery of Art, and Arlington National Cemetery. They also attended a Nationals baseball game, toured the Capitol, and had a very meaningful visit to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. The students stayed in the rectory of the St. Alban's Church located next to the National Cathedral with Father John Lawrence.

Charlie Harrington, Director of EdGE, said, "This was an informative trip which the students earned through hard work. It gave them the opportunity to see what it is like to live in a big city. The students enjoyed each other's company and had a great time.Back to top
EdGE Students Learn Geocaching
Geocaching

EdGE students explore the contents of

a local geocache.

EdGE staff member, Sherry Abbott, with the help of Jackie Hamor and her son Jasper Sheehan, instructed students in Geocaching using handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) devices.

Students learned to set the latitude and longitude coordinates on the GPS, find the coordinates online at the geocaching.com website, and locate several local caches. Once they found the directions to the caches, they used the GPS to find the caches. Caches are small waterproof receptacles containing a log book and some items for trading. Students took an item from the receptacle and left behind a new item of similar value. Some of the items they found were rings, stones, stickers, little toys, and trinkets.

As a follow up activity, the students created their own cache. They took an EdGE  pin and made it into a "travel bug", then enclosed the travel bug in the cache. A travel bug is a trackable item similar to a dog tag. The tag is stamped with a tracking number and the address is placed on the geocaching.com website. Finally, they input the coordinates online for others to find. The EdGE "bug" is already on the move! The "bug" has already traveled 48.54 miles to the bottom of the Mt. Battie trail!  The EdGE cache is located in Sullivan near the Schoodic Animal Hospital. EdGE students have asked that people leave behind cat or dog food to donate to a local animal shelter.  Back to top
EdGE End of Year Celebration
End of Year

EdGE students enjoy the end of year party.

EdGE programs located at Peninsula, Milbridge, Cherryfield, Harrington, D.W. Merritt, Mountain View, and Jonesport Elementary Schools celebrated another successful year in May. Students and their families gathered together at their student's EdGE program site for an afternoon of food, fun, and games to bring another school year for the EdGE program to a close. A typical celebration included a potluck dinner, a slideshow presentation, student awards, and family activities that were filled with great energy and a whole lot of laughter!

This year, regular attending students who attended 30 days or more, were awarded with vouchers good for a free week of summer camp. Back to top
