| 125 Students Participate in Summer Camps |
'River Meets the Sea' student Thomas Osgood, engages in science camp. |

| The EdGE Program offered five weeks of camp from June 21 through July 23. One hundred and twenty-five students participated in at least one of the program's twenty-one day camps, one overnight camp, or one, two week long, high school credit recovery camp. Each Friday afternoon family members were invited to see slideshows that told the story of each camp's activities.
Returning camp favorites included Kayaking Camp, Camp Big Dig, Art Camp, Theatre Camp, and Wilderness Survival Camp. Students engaged in fun hands-on learning and physical fitness activities in every camp. Campers hiked the trails at the Maine Sea Coast Mission's Downeast Campus and took field trips throughout the area that included the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, Roque Bluffs State Park, and the University of Maine Museum of Art in Bangor.
Students explored the local trails, rivers, and lakes in 'EdGE of the Road', a hiking and biking camp, 'Born to Ride', a biking camp, and in two kayaking camps. The overnight camp, aptly titled, 'Commotion in the Ocean' enrolled a dozen students who went aboard the Maine Sea Coast Mission's seventy-five foot vessel, the Sunbeam V, and visited the outlying islands of Frenchboro, Isle au Haut, and Matinicus. |

| Students Receive High School Credit at 'Water-ful' World Camp |
Narraguagus High School students navigate the morning mists. | The EdGE program and Narraguagus High School joined forces to create a hands-on, two week long, intensive course for students who needed to recover a credit in either Science or English in order to graduate. EdGE team members led students on kayaking expeditions to local lakes, rivers, and on the ocean. Narraguagus High School instructors, Helen Sprague and Brittany Ray, taught hands-on lessons where students collected data from their field expeditions. Students kept journals, tracked water temperature, and identified native and invasive species of flora and fauna. Each day students took photos and kept documentation of their work. They presented a media report of their week and scientific findings on the final Friday of the two week course.
Thirteen students successfully completed the course. One student had this to say, "Thank you for making it possible for me to be able to gain another credit so that I can graduate with the class of 2010 next year." Helen Sprague, science instructor at Narraguagus High School said, "The traditional classroom works for many, but not all students. The students it doesn't work for are often overlooked and underachieve because of this. This was an amazing opportunity and experience to see those students blossom in the experiential classroom. It was invaluable for me to be reminded of the diversity of students in their learning needs. |
| Farewell Allison and Peter |
Peter Witkop and Allison Ouellet chaperone students in Washington, DC. | The EdGE Program said goodbye to staff members Peter Witkop, Site Coordinator, and Allison Ouellet, Assistant Program Director, on July 23 at a surprise party. At the gathering, a video made by a high school EdGE student, was shown that captured Peter's and Allison's time at the EdGE program.
Peter started working with the program on a part-time basis in 2006 where he led digital media lessons for students throughout the EdGE service area. In 2008 he joined the staff full time as a Site Coordinator, where he ran the Columbia Falls and Ella Lewis afterschool programs. This past year he coordinated EdGE programming at the Ella Lewis and D.W. Merritt schools. He most enjoyed running outdoor adventure programming. Each summer, he led kayaking and biking camps.
Allison joined the EdGE team in 2005 as a Site Coordinator. She ran the Ella Lewis site from 2005-2007, Harrington Elementary in 2007, and Jonesport/Beals EdGE in 2008. In 2007 she became the Lead Site Coordinator and took over grant reporting. In 2009 she had to unexpectedly fill in for Program Director Charlie Harrington while he was away on medical leave for seven months. This past year she worked as the Assistant Program Director, continuing to oversee grant reporting while also visiting each of the nine EdGE sites to deliver programming.
Allison is leaving the program to attend the University of Maine School of Law in the fall of 2010. Peter, her spouse, is accompanying her. They are excited to be moving to Southern Maine, where Peter grew up, but they will miss all of the students and staff they have grown to love. |
