In Memory of Richard Ruiter
| Last month we lost a dear member of our yoga community. On May 26th Richard Ruiter passed away. I am sure that most of you have seen Richard's smiling face around the studio, and many of you got to know him quite well. Richard had an easy, friendly way about him which made him so dear to all of us.
He had so many friends at the yoga studio. A great group of guys, including Richard, would always go out for coffee in the morning after class. In fact, in Richard's last few months, it was this amazing group of yogis that kept him company. They took turns taking care of him in the hospital, visiting him at home, and making sure he always knew he was loved. Jim, Bill, John, Danny, Mike, you guys are the best! You are a living example of yoga in action, and we love you so much.
At Richard's memorial someone read this beautiful quote from Dr. Seuss: "Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened"
Richard, we are so grateful that you "happened" in all of our lives.

Posture of the Month
| Standing Bow Pulling Pose: Dandayamana-DhanurasanaWhich one minute posture is it when most of the class is standing around looking at each other breathing heavy, and somehow forgetting how to grab the foot again to get back into the posture? Yup you guessed it, the Standing Bow Pose :-) We know its a challenging posture to hold for one minute, but we hope this description from Bikram provides some motivation to hold the posture, or to get back into the posture when you fall out...
Only the Standing Bow moves all
the blood from one side of the body to
the other, then back again. It uses compression and extension to
systematically bring fresh blood and oxygen to all the organs and
glands. It develops balance, increases the elasticity of the rib cage,
firms the abdominal wall and tightens the upper thighs, upper arms, hips
and buttocks. It also improves the flexibility and strength of the
lower spine. Standing Bow builds patience, determination and
concentration.
If you have a hard time balancing in Standing Bow, don't think about balance. Concentrate on kicking back harder while you continuously stretch forward with your arm. Creating this tension is what keeps you balanced in the posture.
Don't dive forward into the posture too fast. Everyone wants to look beautiful in the finished pose, so they rush to get into it. Take the time to get yourself firmly grounded and set on your standing leg before you bring your body down and forward. When you do begin to move, take your time and stay in control. Let the power of the kick do the work. If you are unable to bring your upper body down parallel to the floor, allow yourself to fall gently forward out of the posture. Don't worry: your extended arm will stop you from hitting the floor if you momentarily hit the floor.

Yoga Studio Etiquette
|
This Etiquette section will be a regular feature of our Newsletter from now on. We hope this informs the many new yoga students of our studio etiquette, and for the seasoned yogis... it's always helpful to have a reminder! Yoga Room - Before & After Class:
Be Kind to One Another Respect the Silence
Lately we have heard stories of yoga students being overly loud in the yoga room before and after class, and of yoga students being rude to one another. We are a yoga community, let's all support each other! We need to focus more on how our behavior affects others, and less on how other people affect us. Each of us take care to make sure that our fellow students can see themselves in the front mirror, there is always enough room! And let us all try to maintain a dignified quiet in the yoga room so that everyone can relax. If we hear people talking, it's OK! We can be tolerant of that, and breathe through it, because we are yogis. Snapping at each other does not improve the situation. We are all on a journey of self-improvement together. Let us support each other in all ways and help make this a joyful, fun-filled journey!
