Posture of the Month
| Eagle Pose (Garurasana) "The Eagle supplies fresh blood to the sexual organs, increasing sexual power and control. It helps firm calves, thighs, hips, abdomen and upper arms. It also improves the flexibility of the hip, knee and ankle joints and strengthens the latissimus dorsi, trapezius, and deltoid muscles." (from Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class, 2000) If you have a hard time getting you foot behind your calf muscles in Eagle try this little tip: it's easy to wrap your legs and that toe around the ankle while you're at your desk, and no one knows that you're secretly practicing yoga! Practicing in a chair not only improves your flexibility and speeds your progress in the standing version of the exercise, but it keeps your lower body from going numb on the job.

Student of the Month
| This month we celebrate Carl Davis as our Student of the Month. Many of you know Carl because he is a long time dedicated Bikram Yoga student. If you are a regular evening yogi you most likely have taken many classes with him. What you may not know about Carl is that he faces a unique health challenge. We are grateful that Carl talks to us here about the remarkable health benefits he experiences with Bikram Yoga.
Bikram FH: How long have you been practicing Bikram Yoga?
Carl Davis: 5 years and 4 months
Bikram
FH: How often do you practice?
Carl Davis: 5 to 6 days per week
Bikram FH: What do you see are the major benefits of Bikram Yoga?
Carl Davis: Major benefits for me are: big impact on my health dealing with kidney disease. I call Bikram Yoga my other form of dialysis. The extracting of toxins, the amount of sweating, 6 to 7 lbs per session, helps with fluid management, and with the general tone and shape I maintain doing Bikram Yoga.
Bikram FH: What do you love most about Bikram Yoga? About the studio?
Carl Davis: The people I have met and friendships I have gained. The exercise wrings me out from the inside. I feel soooo good after each session. I used to play sports and I have not participated in a better workout than Bikram Yoga. All the teachers bring a different tone and knowledge, that makes the sessions different from each other, although the 26 postures don't change. Keeps it from being boring. I think the studio is the best in the area, the country. The studio is in a class of its own.
Bikram FH: Personally we are inspired by your commitment to Bikram Yoga, and we have great respect for the health challenges that you face. If you are open to sharing more details about this side of your experience, we know it would greatly inspire our yoga family. Carl Davis: Since I started Bikram Yoga, I have not had to be admitted into the hospital for kidney related issues. I previously frequented the hospital 2 to 3 times per year with average stays of 2 to 4 weeks. I don't have excessive fluid gains since starting Bikram Yoga. I previously had an average of 4 kilograms of fluid in my vascular system from treatment to treatment (a kilo is 2.2 lbs). Blood pressure pills are no longer needed. I only take 2 medications now. I can't figure them out yet (lol). My general health is 10x better now with my regular Bikram Yoga practice. I had one surgery in my abdomen, six inch incision, very visible when I practice. It healed in 3 weeks. I started back practicing when I was released from the hospital, with the staples still in, did what I can do, and to the credit of Bikram Yoga increasing the circulation throughout the body to assist in my recovery. I owe a greater quality of life to Bikram Yoga, in which I pay it off $89 per month (lol). If other patients would listen to me, they would be better off as well. If Bikram Yoga went away I would find a hot place and do the 26 postures daily.
Bikram FH: Thank you Carl for your
commitment to this practice. We love having you at the yoga studio. Your
presence, your smile, and your steady positive attitude is a beautiful
contribution to our community!

Recycling Program
| At the request of many concerned yoga students, this week we will resume our recycling program. Recycling bins will be placed under the sink counters in the changing rooms. Since our landlord no longer offers recycling services, we will rely on our yoga student volunteers to help pickup recyclables on a daily basis. We have a few helpers lined up, but we could use more volunteers! It's easy to help out... the yoga studio will provide a large clear plastic bag to take home the recyclables. Simply set the bag out with your normal trash and recycling bin on your usual residential trash pickup day. Most municipalities will pickup recycling when items are placed in a clear plastic bag. Email us here for more information if you want to volunteer.

Giving Back
| Giving back in support of our local and extended yoga family has always been an important part of Bikram Yoga Farmington Hills. We are proud to have sponsored and supported the following
community programs in 2010. Bikram FH was one of the sponsors at the 7th Annual "Kicks For The Cure". This event took place at Powerhouse Gym in West Bloomfield, and raised over $20,000 for the Karmanos Cancer
Institute.Bikram FH hosted a "Stretch To Help" benefit class, along with 30 other fitness studios
around the Metro Detroit area. This event was organized by the Detroit
Jewish Federation Woman's Department to raise money for Jewish families
in need in the Detroit area. Bikram FH donated to a David Lynch Foundation project, which is teaching thousands of Native Americans to learn meditation, specifically Transcendental Meditation (TM). TM is a natural, easy meditation technique that has been proven to significantly improve health, and in particular diabetes and alcoholism on Native American reservations.
