Standing Head To Knee

"LOCK THE KNEE!  LOCK THE KNEE! LOCK THE KNEE!" 

We know what posture is coming... Standing Head to Knee Pose. What does 'lock the knee' really mean anyway, and why is this instruction so important?

It means that you must continuously contract the thigh muscles and balance on a solid unwavering leg. It is the foundation of this posture because if the thigh muscles remain slack, you will create unnecessary compression in the knee joint, eventually causing damage. When you engage the quadriceps femoris muscles, the tendons and ligaments of the knee become active and pull bone away from bone, strengthening and rehabilitating the joint.
 
Here is a tip from Bikram on Standing Head to Knee:  "When you fall out of this posture at any point, and you will, you must start all over again, at the very first part. Why? As with all the postures, learning Standing Head to Knee is a process. That's what's important, not the outcome. Remember:  the posture is never the object when practicing yoga, the body is the object.  We move forward step-by-step, building the complete and correct form slowly and sequentially, brick by brick.  This posture is a diagnostic tool that shows your levels of focus and determination, both to your teacher and to you. Just as Half Moon tells me immediately how strong, flexible and balanced you are, Standing Head to Knee instantly reveals how much concentration power you have developed." (quote from Bikram Yoga, 2007)

Student of the Month
Lori K

We are happy to honor Lori Katzman as our May Student of the Month. Lori has been practicing with us for many years, and is one of the most dedicated and sincere yogis around. When we asked Lori about her yoga practice this is what she had to say:
 
Bikram FH:  Lori, tell us about some of the health issues you have struggled with, and how Bikram Yoga has affected them.

Lori: Years before I started Bikram yoga, I had been really sick with a lot of stomach issues. I spent a lot of time at doctors' offices and hospitals, no one knew what was wrong with me I would get sick every time I ate. When I was twenty-eight I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, which is an autoimmune disease. I am allergic to wheat and gluten. I was happy that I did not have to take medicine to treat this disease. I only had to make some adjustments in my diet. I began my journey on a wheat free and gluten free diet. For the first time I could finally eat without getting sick. My body felt really toxic from the years of having this disease and not knowing all the damage I was doing to my body. I feel that yoga has been my medicine along with the diet changes. It has helped my body heal. I feel healthier now than ever before and I owe it all to Bikram yoga.

Also, prior to Bikram Yoga I was
diagnosed with Osteopenia (in left hip and spine), a predecessor of Osteoporosis. I recently went to the doctor for an annual check up, which included a bone density test. My test results show that since I have been practicing Bikram Yoga my bone density had increased 2 points! My doctor told me that yoga is the best thing you can do for your bones.
 
Bikram FH: Have you seen other benefits from the yoga, other than these remarkable health benefits you experience?

Lori: Practicing Bikram yoga has taught me to be a better mom. I am a better listener. I have more patience and I'm more relaxed. I have more concentration. I can keep my mind focused. I don't have scattered thoughts. I have determination. I feel I can accomplish anything I set my mind to.  I have more discipline of body and mind. These positive changes have increased my self-assurance and led me back to school.  Bikram yoga has brought health, happiness, success, and peace into my life. Putting so much time and effort into my yoga practice has made a difference in all aspects of my life, and has taught me that when I work hard at something the resulting benefits will make it all worth while.

Bikram FH: Thank you Lori, we really appreciate your presence at the studio, and for sharing your personal story, we know it will inspire our yoga family. Anything else you want to add?

Lori: All the teachers are great! They all have their own unique style.


Top 10 Reasons to Practice Bikram This Summer

Summer is coming soon with warm weather and sunshine!!! Does that mean we should all jump ship and forget about Bikram Yoga? We don't think so! Here's a few reasons why it's good to maintain your regular practice in the summer...
