FIRST FEATURE
Irish Studies Program at LMU Continues With Film Screening
|
of the The Boys of St. Columb's The film and a presentation by Writer and Co-Producer Maurice Fitzpatrick will be held on Saturday, February 27 at 8:00 PM. This film tells the story of how the political and historical conditions of Northern Ireland altered as a result of the mass education of its population, culminating in the Civil Rights Movement of the late 1960s, which drew its inspiration from the struggles for equality in the US.
The film focuses on the "Eleven Plus Generation", the first mass generation of children in Northern Ireland to receive the benefits of a grammar school education as a result of the 1947 Education Act. The documentary, which was made for Irish television by West Park Pictures, features Nobel Prize winners Seamus Heaney and John Hume, composer Phil Coulter and singer songwriter Paul Brady. Also featured are Irish ambassador James Sharkey and retired Bishop of Derry Dr. Edward Daly. There will be a brief introduction by Maurice Fitzpatrick, Co-Producer and Writer. Fitzpatrick will give special emphasis to the way in which the political concerns of John Hume and the imaginative force of Field Day drew support from the U.S., linking Irish politics and art with a broader Irish diasporic identity, and to Hume as a philosopher of non-violence. The screening will also be followed by a Q and A with Maurice Fitzpatrick.
Summary: The hour-long program sees the eight men go back to the former St Columb's building on Bishop Street to discuss their life at the school. Several of the group, Seamus Heaney, Paul Brady and Bishop Daly, boarded at the College and talk about their fears in coming to the school as 11 year-olds and the conditions they had to live in. The program also looks at the relationship between the school and the changing society of Derry in the late 1960s and early 1970s when past pupils such as John Hume and Eamonn McCann came to the fore of the civil rights movement.
For further information, call 310-338-2318 To be placed on the LMU Irish Studies Program E-Mail List, please send a message to irishstudies@lmu.edu.

Ken O'Malley and The Twilight Lords The upcoming Irish Fair at FAIRPLEX will be center stage again for Ken O'Malley and The Twilight Lords. O'Malley and his great Irish Band are favorites for Irish Fair-Goers and Irish Music Fans throughout Southern California. Their appearance is always one of the most anticipated Irish Musical events of the year according to Bill Lomas, the CEO and founder of of the Irish Fair and Irish Days at FAIRPLEX.
Ken O"Malley in Ireland Ric Gentry writing in the Irish News a few years ago summed it up nicely; "Ken O'Malley has emerged, without question, as the single most enduring, influential and proficient of all Irish musicians in Southern California." Another fan wrote to us last year about the Irish Fair and said of O'Malley and his band; "Those guys are great; seeing them is worth the price of admission!!"
Cheryl O'Connor, Alta Loma...Irish News, April 2008

Patrick Facts Here are a few more items of interest about the Great Saint and his Grand Day!
|
Did you know that GREEN is associated with the Irish and
Ireland because of the Shamrock and the great green of the land itself
but that Blue was the dominant color of
his vestments. In Ireland you will often hear the
reference to "St. Patrick Blue" The Shamrock is associated with Saint Patrick's Day, Ireland and the Irish because legend has it that St. Patrick himself used the little plant, native to Ireland, to explain how the Trinity or as he called it THE TRIUNE GOD, could exist as a single entity. The Irish of the time of Patrick were very tuned into nature and their surroundings; so it was a perfect metaphor.
Another legend that St. Patrick drove poisonous snakes out of Ireland; often attributed to him as one of his miracles is probably not true. Evidence suggests that post-glacial Ireland never had any snakes in the first place.
Most scholars believe that St Patrick died on March 17 in 461AD. It is a national holiday in Ireland and also on the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean which was founded by Irish refugees. It is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a provincial holiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland. There have been many failed attempts to make it a National Holiday in the United States. Should we be working on making it a legal Holiday?
And finally, here is a great traditional Irish Toast for St. Patrick's Day;
"May the roof above us never fall in, and may we friends beneath it never fall out."
