Prayer

Proper 11

Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not and for our blindness we cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

 - Book of Common Prayer p. 231

Bishop's Prayer

A Simple Prayer of Commitment:

Come Holy Spirit; fill me so that I can: Dedicate my heart to Christ Jesus, open my mind to seek truth and justice, lift up my hands to welcome the outcast and care for the broken, behold with my eyes the wonders of creation, hear with my ears the story of God in the world, and sing with my lips a song of God's love - with laughter and without worry.  And always in the Name of Jesus. Amen.

 - As shared in the Annual Meeting of the Convention 2011

Ho'ike Ulu Legacy Society Luncheon dates set

by Jane Tonokawa

Taro Legacy Society Every person who has remembered his/her church, Diocese, or an Episcopal ministry in their will or estate plans is a member of this Diocesan society. It can be as simple as naming your church as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or leaving a bequest to your church upon your death.

There are Episcopalians in Hawai'i who have not been recognized for their future gift, and the Planned Giving Committee of the Diocese would like to recognize these individuals on behalf of their future benefactor. Recognizing these individuals in your church will build more awareness and participation. If you qualify or know someone who does or would like to be a member of the Society, please e-mail Jane Tonokawa or Peter Pereira .

We celebrate our Legacy Society members' generosity each year at a gathering on each of the major islands with Bishop Fitzpatrick present. Please save the date that works for you. More details will follow.

The following announcement was prepared by the Rev. Dan Werning, Choirmaster for the Hawai'i Sacred Choir, and Music Director at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Kapahulu.
Desmond Tutu
Sing in England for a week (and eat in Hogwarts Dining Hall)
The Hawai'i Sacred Choir is announcing plans to sing as a "choir in residence" in the summer of 2014 at a great English cathedral.  It could be Salisbury Cathedral, Wells Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Christ Cathedral Oxford, or one of a number of others.  We would also plan on seeing London, Stonehenge, the Harry Potter "Hogwarts Dining Hall" at Christ College Oxford, and other sights.

This will require two years of preparation and training, so now is the time to begin!  It is a large dream, but that is what attracts foundations and funding.  Musically, we will prepare to sing six days of Evensong and Eucharist services, but we have begun preparing by teaching the Royal School of Church Music Voice for Life program starting this fall.  While we will need to learn six Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis settings, we only need to learn one set per term, so that will not be so hard.  We will plan a "choir camp" next summer to learn how to sing those and other parts of a cathedral service.

This trip will be the thrill of a lifetime for children and adults alike. Now is the time to make the commitment by auditioning for the choir, or for you principals, teachers, directors and individuals who know other singers, recommend them to us!

At this point, we do not know the cost, but it will be subsidized in some way, so don't let that stop you from auditioning. We do know that by just a few weeks from now we will have the dates and location set so your scheduling can begin now for the summer of 2014. We will utilize professional tour management, specifically, Richardson and Gray. They have done many successful tours, and you can read about them at that site.

Spread the word and plan an audition with us today! It will truly be a life-changing experience. Rev. Werning can be reached at 808-338-3121, or visit the Hawaii Sacred Choir website HERE.

What's Happening in The Episcopal Church?

Announcements from around The Episcopal Church...

________________________________________________________

The following are excerpts from an article from the Episcopal News Service Media Hub of the 77th General Convention that took place July 5-12, 2012.

GC House of Bishops

Convention Wrap-up: Re-envisioning church for the 21st century
[Episcopal News Service - Indianapolis] General Convention has called on the Episcopal Church to re-imagine its structure, taken historic steps towards full inclusion, endorsed positive investment in the Palestinian Territories, and reaffirmed its commitment to building Anglican Communion relationships while declining to take a position on the Anglican Covenant.

Based on the Anglican Communion's Five Marks of Mission, the budget for the Episcopal Church in the 2013-2015 triennium was adopted unanimously by the 77th General Convention July 11.

The budget, available here, is balanced at $111,516,032, compared to $111,808,350 for the current triennium, and comes with a small surplus of $30,000.

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and outgoing President of the House of Deputies Bonnie Anderson addressed the media at a closing news conference July 12.

At this convention, "you have seen the Episcopal Church not only of the future, but of today, in the presence of young adults, a more significant number than we've seen in a long time, people of many nations and tribes and language traditions," said Jefferts Schori, noting that more than 40 international guests attended convention. "The Episcopal Church is healthy, it's becoming healthier, and it's poised for an even more significant impact on the world around us. There's no stopping us. Watch out world. We're coming."
