On the last Monday of May, we observe what was known as Decoration Day, a day set aside to honor the Civil War dead by decorating their graves with strewn flowers. Now known as Memorial Day, it commemorates the men and women who died during all military service to our country. Many hold with tradition and decorate the graves of their loved ones with bouquets. In addition, all known veterans will have an American Flag at their grave placed by a group - Sons of the American Legion Squadron 275. The Independence group (with the help of many other patrotic organizations) does 8 cemeteries in the Kenton County area. LET US REMEMBER THE REASON FOR THE DAY!
Covington will participate in the day with a parade at 2:00 from Holmes High School to Linden Grove Cemetery where a Memorial Service will be held. The parade will be held rain or shine with the exception of a extended thunderstorm.
Interested groups may contact Charles Menke 292-2327 for information. | |

Irish Monument Finds Home Northern Kentucky local park to host memorial
A location for an Irish Potato Famine memorial project, 10 years in the making, has finally been placed in Covington, Ky., and is awaiting final approval.
"It was as if by a miracle we found this location in Devou Park," Holliday said. "It is right smack in between the two locations. It couldn't be more perfect." In the past few years, Kenton County Library teamed with local archivist Tom Ward, to help The Great Hunger Memorial Project Committee finish the historical research on the area.
The memorial will include 32 stones shipped overseas from Ireland to represent the 32 counties of the country. Each will hold a brief story or bit of information about the location. In addition, the design will be that of a Dolmen, which is an ancient tomb using stones.

DEVOU PARK WEST TRAIL PROJECT A HUGE SUCCESS~
Generosity of Bike Donors adds to the day!
Thanks to Mr. Bob Roskopp, owner of Santa Cruz Mountain Bikes in Santa Cruz, California, and originally from Cincinnati, and Mark and Nancy Steenken of Latonia, two of the day's school-age Volunteers went home with state of the art mountain bikes! The bike donations and awards were coordinated by Meredith Potter, Fitness Rocks Coordinator for Covington Independent Schools. Jacob Lucas won the Santa Cruz Superlight Mountain Bike donated by Bob Roskopp and Santa Cruz Mountain Bikes and Norma Meyer won the BMX dirt/trick bike donated by Mark and Nancy Steenken of Latonia! Click here to read more about the bikes and their generous donors! Trail Building Day 1 Recap~
On Saturday, March 28th, approximately 150 Volunteers came to Devou Park West (west of Sleepy Hollow Road) to help construct the first phase of Covington's first mountain bike riding (non-motorized) and hiking trails! Despite overcast skies and the threat of rain all day, Volunteers were busy with hand tools and other equipment clearing brush and grading a 6,000' section of trail in this 235 acre area of Devou Park. Other Volunteers stayed busy cleaning up all types of litter including tires, car parts, bottles and cans. Many Volunteers were from Give Back Cincinnati and U-Give High, its high school age association; Kentucky Mountain Biking Association and CORA; Covington Schools including Two Rivers, Holmes, Covington Latin; and other schools including Notre Dame Academy and Badin High School in Cincinnati; as well as Volunteers from Ohio, Indiana and even Louisville! Approximately one (1) mile of sustainable trail was cleared and graded by these Volunteers.
Coming Up:
The next trail building day will be on Saturday, May 9th when Give Back Cincinnati will be back with around 150 of its Members to volunteer for the day in continuing the trail building in Devou Park West! In addition, Jason Ramler and URS Engineering has volunteered to provide a design for small bridges for the Devou Park West trail system that can be replicated using volunteers and Scout groups in the future. If any Scout groups want to sponsor a bridge building project, or if anyone wants to participate in the May 9th trail building day, please contact Assistant City Manager Larry Klein at 292-2160 or at lklein@covingtonky.gov if you are interested in helping in any way! PAINT IT FORWARD City of Covington employees are planning to paint the exterior of 5 or 6 low income owner occupied homes located in the City this summer. These homes are chosen based upon need and will be completed within a day. Several departments have sponsored houses to be completed on a Saturday in May or June. At this time we still need all the help we can get, and there is also volunteer time available on Fridays assisting Code Enforcement with prep work for painting. We are also selling raffle tickets for $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00. Any items that you may have to donate or contact information for potential donors would be greatly appreciated. Mayor Bowman will be drawing winners on May 8, 2009 at 1:00 pm, so we don't have a lot of time. Anyone wishing to volunteer to paint, sell raffle tickets, or donate an item can call Teresa Foreman at 859-292-2323. Thank you for your interest!

Swine Flu
What is Swine Influenza (flu)? Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. Swine flu viruses cause high level of illness and low death rates in pigs. Swine influenza viruses may circulate among swine throughout the year, but most outbreaks occur during the late fall and winter months similar to outbreaks in humans. The Classical swine flu virus (an influenza type A H1N1 virus) was first isolated from a pig in 1930. (CDC information sheet 2009) What are the symptoms of swine flu in humans? The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include FEVER, LETHARGY, LACK OF APPETITE AND COUGHING. Some people with swine flu also have reported RUNNY NOSE, SORE THROAT NAUSEA, VOMITING AND DIARRHEA. How does swine flu spread? Influenza viruses can be directly transmitted from pigs to people and from people to pigs. Human infection with flu viruses from pigs are most likely to occur when people are in close proximity to infected pigs, such as in pig barns and livestock exhibits housing pigs at fairs. Human to human transmission of swine flu can also occur. This is thought to occur in the same way as seasonal flu occurs in people, which is mainly PERSON TO PERSON TRANSMISSION through coughing or sneezing of people infected with the influenza virus. People may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose SWINE INFLUENZA VIRUSES ARE NOT TRANSMITTED BY FOOD. YOU CANNOT GET SWINE INFLUENZA FROM EATING PORK OR PORK PRODUCTS. Infectious period Persons with swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection should be considered potentially contagious for up to 7 days following illness onset. Persons who continue to be ill longer than 7 days after illness onset should be considered potentially contagious until symptoms have resolved. Children, especially younger children, might potentially be contagious for longer periods.

We currently have many girls on waiting lists to be involved, but don't have enough adult leaders. We provide the FREE training, supplies and the girls for each troop-you provide the opportunity to participate. If you're interested in making a difference in a child's life, learning new skills, visiting new places, being a mentor and a positive role model to girls, please contact Kendra Proctor, GSKWRC Membership Specialist, at 859-342-6263, ext. 19 or kproctor@gswrc.org. If there is a girl in your life is looking for a troop to join, it's not too late! Many schools in Covington have troops that might work for you. Just give us a call and we'll find something that works for your schedule!
