The Washington, D.C., internships may be full or part-time and are likewise unpaid. While academic credit may be obtained, many students do the internships strictly for the educational experience. Applicants must be enrolled in college or graduate school.
If you know of a student who might be interested in interning this summer, please share with them the attached application and encourage them to apply soon. Department of Public Improvements |
Route 17 Improvements
Loop detectors, pedestrian push buttons, and overhead lane use signs have been installed by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet at the intersections of Madison and Wallace, 20th and Madison, 20th and Scott, and 20th and Greenup. This will keep the traffic lights green on Route 17 and only turn red when a car on a side street trips the sensor. This will make the new route faster and more efficient for through traffic.
Beginning March 9, the parking on the East side of Madison between Sterrett and Wallace will be prohibited. The curb lane will no longer be forced to turn onto Sterrett. To help with the removal of parking, the PM parking restriction on the West side of Madison between Sterrett and Wallace will also be removed.
South bound traffic on Scott will be encouraged to turn right onto 20th because the right hand lane after the intersection will be closed off. The left hand lane will remain open. A right turn green arrow will remain on unless a car approaches the intersection from west bound 20th. The right hand lane closure will be a temporary material at first and will switch to a permanent material when if it is determined to be effective.
More signage will be installed in the area and message boards will be brought in to help identify the changes.
These are the first phase changes planned. These changes will be assessed for their effectiveness for 90 days and other installations will be considered if needed in the future.
Gas Main Replacements
Duke Energy is currently replacing gas mains as part of 3 projects within the City of Covington. The project areas are shown in the attached maps. This work must be complete by the end of the year, but we are expecting everything to be done by the end of summer. The roadways will be restored to their original condition or better upon project completion. Please be patient with the roadway restoration, all of the new gas mains have to be tested before the road can be resurfaced.
Potholes
Right-of-Way crews continue to repair potholes throughout the city. Please report any potholes or road related maintenance issues to the Department of Public Improvements.

Artisans Enterprise Center presents
'Textalgia: Eliciting or displaying of nostalgia through the exploration of textures'
Artists: Emily Casagrande, sculpture, David Michael Rice, sculpture, installation and found objects, Dustin Pike, digital illustrations and graphic design and Paul Tribble, mixed media and found objects.
A Short Description of the Show: Four artists explore the potential of communication through their mediums with different textures. Clay, found objects, graphic design and digital illustrations are all used to explore the inner workings of technology, relationships and emotions associated with contemporary realities. The artists employ traditional methods in describing their own apropos subject matter. The exhibition celebrates tactile representations of the 'stuff within the stuff' through display of a range of contemporary artistic expressions.
First Friday opening March 6th, 6-10:00 pm
Additional Lectures at the Artisans Enterprise Center and Associated with the Exhibition: March 13th 6pm Artists Panel mediated by David Knight, Director of Exhibitions and Collections and Steven Finke, Associate Professor of Art at Northern Kentucky University. We are delighted to host this event where David Knight and Steven Finke talk with the artists showing their works at 'Textalgia' about their impetus to create and their influences during the process. The audience is encouraged to ask questions. March 25th 6pm 'Mr. Farny's Neighborhood' presented by Elaine Kuhn, Kentucky History Services Coordinator for the Kenton County Public Library (KCPL), presents a retrospective lecture on the life of Henry Farny, the foremost painter of the American Indian and the "Old West" landscape. A native of France, Mr. Farny was a dedicated resident of Covington for many years. The lecture focuses on life and work in Covington during the time Mr. Farny lived here. Audience participation is encouraged. Thursday, March 26th 6pm, Transformedia From Dark Caves to the digital age: a survey of media used in visual communication. An investigation into how the media shapes the message, culture and society. A narrative from a graphic designer's perspective. Friday, March 27th 6pm, Art and Healing Psychologist Dr. Anne Paris draws on her extensive experience working with artists to explore the personal fears that thwart creativity. Arguing that creative blocks and procrastinations are actually the artist's attempts at self-preservation when facing normal psychological issues inherent in the creative process, Dr. Paris suggests that success comes from understanding the deep hopes and fears that profoundly influence creative capacity. Dr. Anne Paris is the author of 'Standing at Water's Edge: Moving Past Fear, Blocks, and Pitfalls to Discover the Power of Creative Immersion(New World Library, June 1, 2008)'.

Smoke Alarm Safety Tips
Smoke alarms save lives. Sixty-five percent of home fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms at all or no smoke alarms that work. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out.
Safety tips
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.
- An ionization smoke alarm is generally more responsive to flaming fires, and a photoelectric smoke alarm is generally more responsive to smoldering fires. For the best protection, both types of alarms or a combination alarm (photoelectric and ionization) should be installed in homes.
- Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button.
- Smoke rises; install smoke alarms following manufacturer's instructions high on a wall or on a ceiling. Save manufacturer's instructions for testing and maintenance.
- Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. If an alarm "chirps", warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away.
- Replace all smoke alarms, including alarms that use 10-year batteries and hard-wired alarms, when they are 10 year old or sooner if they do not respond properly.
- Be sure the smoke alarm has the label of a recognized testing laboratory.
- Alarms that are hard-wired (and include battery backup) must be installed by a qualified electrician.
- If cooking fumes or steam sets off nuisance alarms, replace the alarm with an alarm that has a "hush" button. A "hush" button will reduce the alarm's sensitivity for a short period of time.
- An ionization alarm with a hush button or a photoelectric alarm should be used if the alarm is within 20 feet of a cooking appliance.
- Smoke alarms that include a recordable voice announcement in addition to the usual alarm sound, may be helpful in waking children through the use of a familiar voice.
- Smoke alarms are available for people who are deaf or hard of hearing . These devices use strobe lights. Vibration devices can be added to these alarms
Smoke alarms are an important part of a home fire escape plan.

The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center
Presents: The Art of Food March 6 - March 20, 2009 Opening Reception March 6, 6:00 - 9:00pm
Ornate edible creations and sculpture were often created for celebrations in the cities and courts of early modern Europe. The Art of Food, an exhibition of ephemeral art created out of food, pays homage to this past and will feature food as more than a necessity, but as a taste experience.
The Art of Food explores the ways in which food is a complete sensory experience along with creative interpretations from artists who use food as the inspiration for the art. Today, the food industry is integrated in all aspects of pleasing the senses.
This unique two-week exhibition attracts the art and culinary masters in the area, to create the best art, food and atmospheres. The exhibition opens with a Grand Event to initiate the run of his exhibition. Top chefs from the greater Cincinnati area, fantastic local artists and actors and the public will come together to experience the dynamic way in which food comprises an art form.
