New Businesses in Covington! |
bioLOGIC Group is a global life science investment and management company. Their US headquarters recently relocated to Covington in October 2008 along with several of their companies. Two of those companies are the first to register as KY companies: PrimeDP (drug development company) and Bexion Pharmaceuticals (anti cancer company). They hope to register at least two additional companies in the near future as they move into their new space on Russell Street. The Company's mission is to establish and grow life science companies. The bioLOGIC vision is to catalyze a biotech/life science corridor and launch new companies in Covington. With their move to Russell Street and building out lab space at that location, they are taking the first step in that direction.

Business Relations and Retention Office
Grow Covington Funds Offer Covington Businesses Opportunity to Restructure Debt
Business is being hit hard by our current economic situation and while you can't ever get out of debt by borrowing more, you can stabilize your business debt service by borrowing wisely. Grow Covington Funds are a wise and timely financing option that businesses can access through the Department of Economic Development and Community Relations to refinance existing debt and stabilize debt service payments, usually with lower interest rates and longer terms. These funds are made available through a unique partnership between the City of Covington and Grow America Funds, through the National Development Council.
The Grow Covington Fund is a versatile program often working with local lending institutions to structure the best terms to meet the needs of the business. Some highlights of this National Development Council program are:
- Longer Terms - Repayment using longer terms means smaller monthly loan payments, giving the borrower more time to reach full potential
Term examples: Working Capital Line of Credit - 3 to 10 years (usually 5 to 7 years) Machinery and Equipment - 5 to 10 years or life of the asset Tenant Improvements - term of the lease Real Estate - Up to 25 years Construction/Renovation - Up to 25 years
- Larger Loans - Loans range from $65,000 to $2,000,000
- Lower Down Payments, if any - Higher loan-to-value ratios allow the business to maximize equity available for growth
- Lower Interest Rate - Allows for lower down payments keeping cash in the business to fund its growth
- Better Structure - Funds match the terms of the loan to the life of the assets being financed, making sure debt service doesn't exceed available cash flow.
Grow Covington Funds finance viable businesses with true staying power and growth potential that don't meet a conventional lender's profile by providing the credit they need to realize their full potential. If you would like more information regarding these funds, qualifications or a comparison of debt service savings, please contact:

Keeping Your Home Safe And Warm Follow these safety tips from CDC, the National Fire Protection Association, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to prevent injuries and deaths related to heating your home.
- Install a smoke alarm near bedrooms and on each floor of your home. Test it monthly. If it has a 9-volt battery, change the battery once a year.
- Install a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm near bedrooms and on each floor of your home. If your alarm sounds, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission suggests that you press the reset button, call emergency services (911 or your local fire department), and immediately move to fresh air (either outdoors or near an open door or window). Know the symptoms of CO poisoning: headache, fatigue, dizziness, and shortness of breath. If you experience any of these symptoms, get fresh air right away and contact a doctor for proper diagnosis.
- Make sure heating equipment is installed properly. Have a trained specialist inspect and tune up your heating system each year.
- Keep portable space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn, including bedding, furniture, and clothing. Never drape clothing over a space heater to dry.
- Keep children and pets away from space heaters. Never leave children in a room alone when a space heater is in use.
- If you use a kerosene heater, use only the fuel recommended by the manufacturer. Never put gasoline in a kerosene heater--it could explode. Before you refuel the heater, turn it off and let it cool down. Refuel outside only.
- When using a kerosene heater, keep a door open to the rest of the house or open a window slightly. This will reduce the chance of carbon monoxide build-up in the room.
- Have your fireplace chimney and flue inspected each year and cleaned if needed. Open the flue and use a sturdy fireplace screen when you have a fire. Burn only untreated wood; never burn paper or pine branches--pieces can float out the chimney and ignite your roof, a neighbor's roof, or nearby trees.
- If you use a wood-burning stove, have the chimney connection and flue checked each year. Make sure the stove is placed on an approved stove board to protect the floor from heat and coals.
- Never use your range or oven to heat your home, even for a short time.
Stay safe, Chief Young

CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY
The Covington Police Citizen's Academy allows for diverse populations of adults throughout the city to come together for training and education on various police-oriented topics. The purpose of our academy is to create understanding through education and to promote a positive relationship with our community. The Citizens Academy is a two-way educational process. The participants are given training in many of the same areas as a recruit might experience but on a lesser scale. While citizens are learning about what police officers do on a daily basis, officers are learning how citizens feel about certain issues. In this way, both the police and the citizens benefit from the academy about certain issues. The Covington Police Citizen's Academy consists of a 12-week program that provides a wide variety of law-related education. Instructors from the rank and file of our department help to make the classes enjoyable by providing hands-on activities in each class.
Participants will be exposed to every major facet of police training, including: ˇ History of policing/department ˇ Organizational structure of the department ˇ Communications ˇ Criminal Law/Justice system ˇ Patrol and Traffic ˇ Criminal Investigation ˇ Hate crimes/Crime Lab ˇ Firearms Training/K-9 ˇ S.W.A.T. team/bike & mounted patrol ˇ Use of force ˇ Community policing ˇ Crime prevention ˇ Street drugs/crime suppression unit ˇ Domestic violence/juvenile crime ˇ Defensive tactics ˇ Search and seizure
Students are also invited to participate in a ride-along program in which they are paired with an officer for the duration of a normal shift, wherein they can experience, first hand, what an officer's daily duties include.
The only requirements for becoming a participant in the Covington Police Citizen's Academy are participants MUST be at least 18 years of age and live and/or work in Covington.
The Police Department is now taking applications for the next Citizen's Police Academy. The Academy will begin Thursday, February 19, 2009, and will meet every Thursday until May 14, 2009. The class meets from 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm at Police Headquarters, Lower Level Training Room, 1 Police Memorial Drive, Covington, KY.
