DEVOU PARK WEST TRAIL PROJECT A HUGE SUCCESS!
On Saturday, March 28th, approximately 150 Volunteers came to Devou Park West (west of Sleepy Hollow Road) to help construct the first phase of Covington's first mountain bike riding (non-motorized) and hiking trails! Despite overcast skies and the threat of rain all day, Volunteers were busy with hand tools and other equipment clearing brush and grading a 6,000' section of trail in this 235 acre area of Devou Park. Other Volunteers stayed busy cleaning up all types of litter including tires, car parts, bottles and cans. Many Volunteers were from Give Back Cincinnati and U-Give High, its high school age association; Kentucky Mountain Biking Association and CORA; Covington Schools including Two Rivers, Holmes, Covington Latin; and other schools including Notre Dame Academy and Badin High School in Cincinnati; as well as Volunteers from Ohio, Indiana and even Louisville! Approximately one (1) mile of sustainable trail was cleared and graded by these Volunteers.
What's Next?
The next trail building day will be on Saturday, May 9th when Give Back Cincinnati will be back with around 150 of its Members to volunteer for the day in continuing the trail building in Devou Park West! In addition, Jason Ramler and URS Engineering has volunteered to provide a design for small bridges for the Devou Park West trail system that can be replicated using volunteers and Scout groups in the future. If any Scout groups want to sponsor a bridge building project, or if anyone wants to participate in the May 9th trail building day, please contact Assistant City Manager Larry Klein at 292-2160 or at lklein@covingtonky.gov if you are interested in helping in any way!

DPI Division Duties
Loop detectors, pedestrian push buttons, and overhead lane use signs have been installed by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet at the intersections of Madison and Wallace, 20th and Madison, 20th and Scott, and 20th and Greenup. This will keep the traffic lights green on Route 17 and only turn red when a car on a side street trips the sensor. This will make the new route faster and more efficient for through traffic.
Beginning March 9, the parking on the East side of Madison between Sterrett and Wallace will be prohibited. The curb lane will no longer be forced to turn onto Sterrett. To help with the removal of parking, the PM parking restriction on the West side of Madison between Sterrett and Wallace will also be removed.
South bound traffic on Scott will be encouraged to turn right onto 20th because the right hand lane after the intersection will be closed off. The left hand lane will remain open. A right turn green arrow will remain on unless a car approaches the intersection from west bound 20th. The right hand lane closure will be a temporary material at first and will switch to a permanent material when if it is determined to be effective.
More signage will be installed in the area and message boards will be brought in to help identify the changes.
These are the first phase changes planned. These changes will be assessed for their effectiveness for 90 days and other installations will be considered if needed in the future.
Gas Main Replacements
Duke Energy is currently replacing gas mains as part of 3 projects within the City of Covington. The project areas are shown in the attached maps. This work must be complete by the end of the year, but we are expecting everything to be done by the end of summer. The roadways will be restored to their original condition or better upon project completion. Please be patient with the roadway restoration, all of the new gas mains have to be tested before the road can be resurfaced.
Potholes
Right-of-Way crews continue to repair potholes throughout the city. Please report any potholes or road related maintenance issues to the Department of Public Improvements.

Extension Cord Safety
We use extension cords almost every day both at work and at home. These are very useful devices, but they can present a fire or shock hazard when either worn out or used improperly. Types of extension cords Extension cords come in either two or three-wire types. Two-wire extension cords should only be used to operate one or two small appliances. Three-wire cords are used for outdoor appliances and electric power tools. The third wire on this cord is a ground and this type of cord should never be plugged into any ungrounded electrical outlet. Only grounded extension cords are to be used with power tools unless the tool is double insulated. Construction sites require extension cords that are specified by the National Electric Code for hard usage or extra hard usage. Approved cords may be identified by the word "outdoor" or the letters "WA" on the jacket. Care and inspection of extension cords Extension cords must be treated with care and checked regularly for damage or deterioration. The cord itself should never be pulled to disconnect it from an electrical source; remove it by the plug. They should not be placed under rugs or furniture and should never be strung through doorways, windows, walls, ceilings, or floors. Damaged cords present a potential fire or shock hazard and should be destroyed and replaced immediately. An extension cord should never be used as a substitute for permanent wiring. They should not be fastened to a building or structure, even though staples are sold for this purpose at many hardware stores. Avoid plugging two cords together to make a longer one. It's best to use one cord in a continuous length from the receptacle to the appliance or tool. Extension cords that are either connected together or are too long will reduce operating voltage and operating efficiency of tools or appliances and may cause motor damage. Extension cords are convenient devices we often take for granted in our everyday activities, but which need proper care and attention. Use good housekeeping practices at home and at work, to keep extension cords from being a tripping hazards or becoming damaged. Inspect them regularly for wear and replace defective units.
