December 2010

A Year in Review

As we count down the days to the New Year and a bright future, it's also a good time to reflect on what Private Prep accomplished over the past 12 months.

Stefanie Lob took the reins of Private Prep Westchester this past summer. In just a few months, she has cemented herself as an insightful resource to our families and local educators in the Westchester community.

As the 2010-2011 school year approached, we successfully implemented a dashboard system on our website. The system has proven to be a useful avenue of communication between our academic coaches, students and parents. Thanks to valuable feedback, we have been able to continue to improve the dashboard system with new features.

This school year also marked the introduction of the Private Prep Rewards Program and partnership with the Children's Storefront, an independent, tuition-free school in Harlem. To date we have donated nearly 50 hours of one-on-one tutoring to students at the Children's Storefront. Thanks for your generosity!

This past fall, we launched Private Prep Long Island through a partnership with Jeremy Cohen. We have piloted a new SAT prep program that combines the benefits of small class instruction and one-on-one tutoring in Long Island. On December 8, we completed the class instruction component of the program. Thus far, we have received overwhelmingly positive feedback and plan to offer the program in other Private Prep communities.

Adam Dressler was named Test Prep Director in November. One of the first members of the Private Prep team, Adam has repeatedly delivered impressive results with our students on the SAT and ACT. In his role as Test Prep Director, Adam now oversees the ongoing development of test prep materials and training programs.

Above all, students have thrived under the terrific guidance of Private Prep's academic coaches. They have improved grades, honed academic skills, and increased standardized test scores. This week many Private Prep high school seniors received fantastic news: early decision acceptance letters from great colleges across the country!

We look forward to another year filled with exciting developments in 2011!

Blog: Attitude Matters

A recent New York Times article cites the power of humor on mental performance.  Scientists "had college students solve word-association puzzles after watching a short video of a stand-up routine by Robin Williams.  The students solved more of the puzzles over all, and significantly more by sudden insight, compared with when they'd seen a scary or boring video beforehand."  Humor-specifically wit-can have an observable impact on a student's ability to manage the problem-solving skills required by a standardized test.

We hope you enjoy winter vacation. Happy holidays!
