ComplianceProgramQuick Tips
Put it in writing.
In real estate, it's "Location, Location, Location". In EHS management, it's "Document, Document, Document". You may have a congenial relationship with your regulatory agencies, but don't get lulled into a false sense of security regarding verbal communications. Be sure you document the date, time, and all salient points of all telephone conversations that you have with regulators.

Many regulators, especially OSHA, are considering the need for formal regulation and oversight for Health and Safety. Senior management supported by EHS professionals and others selects exposure controls that may be life-saving. >>>

Prevention Through Design Debby Shewitz, CSP, PHA, Cleveland, OH
At the NIOSH Green Jobs: Making Green Jobs Safe Workshop Dr. David Michaels included Prevention Through Design (PtD) as a focus moving forward. It's not one that safety professionals have heard much about from OSHA before now. Those who work in industries covered by OSHA's Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals (PSM) Standard are already using PtD techniques. >>> |
Flexing Muscles to Clear the Air in Texas Curt Johnson, CPEA, Richmond, TX
There is no doubt about the tension in the air in Texas concerning its State Implementation Plan for air quality. At the center of the controversy is the issue of Texas Flexible Permits. TCEQ came up with the concept of Texas Flexible Permits to address some of the largest facilities in Texas that due to their age would have been grandfathered from having to obtain Title V Permits under the Clean Air Act. >>> |
Fortune Cookie Wisdom Curt Johnson, CPEA, Richmond, TX
Anyone who has attended even a single training session about implementation of management systems has been heard about the Plan/Do/Check/Act cycle for continual improvement. Discussion of the Plan/Do/Check/Act cycle has become as trite as the fortune provided in many fortune cookies. Sometimes however, the fortune makes it all as obvious as - well, the fortune in your hands. >>> |
