Congratulations to Winners of the 2012 SoCalBio Scholar Awards from Orange County
|
SoCalBio participated in the Orange County Science Fair held on April 10 to select 5 winners of its 2012 Scholar Awards. We are pleased to announce the following winners who were selected from participants representing high schools in the County:
- Jiho Park (University High School): "Modeling and Molecular Dynamics: Simulations of Membrane-bound Aromatase Reveal Insight Into Ligand Binding and Mechanism and Novel Druggable Sites"
- Kevin Lee (University High School): "Utility of the Spatial Peaks QR S-T Angle in Distinguishing Left Ventricular Hypertrophy From Athletic Heart Syndrome"
- Alex Jow (University High School): "ERK-related Synaptic Deficits in a Mouse Model of Autism: Potential Therapeutic Solutions to an Epidemic"
- Andrew Ninh (Fountain Valley High School): "Discovering the Distribution of Palindromic Sequences in the SMAD-4 Gene Using Large and Medium Deletion Mutations"
- Dennis Shim (Woodbury High School): "Double-resistant Bacteria: Effect of Transforming Ampicillin and Kanamycin-resistant Plasmids on the Percentage of E. coli that is Double-resistant to Ampicillin and Kanamycin"
These students, along with winners of the 2012 SoCalBio Scholar Awards from Los Angeles, Ventura County, the Inland Empire, will compete for the opportunity to represent Southern California during the BioGENEius Challenge organized by the Biotechnology Institute in conjunction with the BIO International Convention in Boston (MA) from June 18 to June 21. Out of the 20 SoCalBio Scholar Award winners, two nominees will be Selected by SoCalBio to compete for the BioGENEius Award.
The International BioGENEius Challenge is the premier competition for high school students that recognizes outstanding research in biotechnology. The International BioGENEius Challenge promotes excellence and enables students to continue research in biotechnology and design an original independent research project. This competition is an intensive and valuable research experience for high school students.

Approved in January 2012, the Irvine Biomedical's Therapy Cool Path Duo Ablation Catheter; Safire BLU Duo Ablation Catheter; and IBI 1500T-9 VI.6 Cardiac Ablation Generator are intended for use in creating endocardial lesions during cardiac ablation procedures (mapping, stimulation and ablation) for the treatment of typical atrial flutter.
