California Cigarette Tax Could Ignite Cancer Research
Californians will vote next June on Proposition 29 -- a tobacco tax measure that would generate more than $700 million a year for cancer research. Prop. 29 seeks a new $1 a pack tax on cigarettes. The measure is opposed by tobacco companies as a "$735 million tax hike" that is "flawed and poorly drafted," but proponents including patient advocacy groups, universities and research hospitals argue it will bring significant health and economic benefits to the State ... California's Stem Cell Agency Ponders its Future When Public Money Runs Out

Biotech Funding Gets Harder to Find
A Wall Street Journal article contending that biotech funding is getting harder to find. Venture capitalists invested a total of $3.92 billion last year in biotechs of all stages, well below the $6.17 billion peak in 2007, according to VentureSource. The authors conclude that "Biotechnology firms are coming around to a harsh reality: The gravy days are over" .... Read article (requires subscription)
WSJ to Biotech: "You're All Going To Die." Thanks - Now Let's Keep Fighting
David Shaywitz, a contributor to Forbes, responds to the Wall Street Article mentioned above. He contends that the key in restoring investor confidence in biotech is in adopting methiods to reduce drug development cost and the industry's regulatory burden.
