SoCalBio participated in the Ventura County Science Fair held on March 21 to select 5 winners of its 2012 Scholar Awards from Los Angeles. We are pleased to announce the following winners who were selected from participants representing numerous high schools in Ventura County: - Brad King and Jace King (Thousand Oaks High School): Effects of Different Factors on E. coli Transformation and RFP Expression
- Genesis Zhong and Calvin Wong (Villa Nova Preparatory School): Chemilumininescence: Luminol
- Samir Malhotra (Thousand Oaks High School): A Model for Water Transport Mediated by Aquaporins in the Middle Ear
- Lindsey Hulsebus (Villa Nova Preparatory School): An iPad App for Alzheimer Patients and Caregivers
- Adam Protter (Thousand Oaks High School): Investigation of Antimicrobial Properties of Extracts of Piper (L.) Species
These students, along with winners of the 2012 SoCalBio Scholar Awards from Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire, will compete for the opportunity to represent Southern California during the BioGENEius Challenge organized by the Biotechnology Institute in conjunction with the BIO International Convention in Boston (MA) from June 18 to June 21. Out of the 20 SoCalBio Scholar Award winners, two nominees will be Selected by SoCalBio to compete for the BioGENEius Award.
The International BioGENEius Challenge is the premier competition for high school students that recognizes outstanding research in biotechnology. The International BioGENEius Challenge promotes excellence and enables students to continue research in biotechnology and design an original independent research project. This competition is an intensive and valuable research experience for high school students. |

Edwards Lifesciences ($EW) wants the FDA to approve its Sapien transcatheter heart valve implant for a broader class of patients. Company officials plan to make their case before an FDA advisory panel of experts June 13. The panel's positive recommendation would boost Edwards' chances of gaining regulatory approval to use Sapien in patients with severe, symptomatic aortic stenosis who are at high risk for surgery.
