Solar Flares Facts

The biggest solar storm to hit the US in more than six years is occurring.

Here are some interesting facts you may not know:

- Solar flares send radiation in the form of protons to Earth at an average of 93 million miles per hour

- Strongest flares can reach the Earth within as fast as 15 minutes

- Can release as much energy as a billion megatons of TNT

- A flare in 1989 caused a blackout in Quebec, Canada

- Solar flares were first discovered in 1859

2011's Top 25 Global Alternative Energy Moves Included:

#1. NASA's solar powered spacecraft Juno launched in August on a 2 billion mile, five year mission to Jupiter.  By year end, Juno had completed 61 million miles of the journey.

#2  California hit the 1 gigawatt milestone of solar installations.

#5.  Tallest US building, Chicago's Willis Tower (aka Sears Tower) was outfitted on the entire south side of the 56th floor with transparent solar powered windows to beta test a "vertical" solar farm.

#16  The tiny New Zealand island of Tokelau went 100% renewable to set an example for the world using its two most plentiful resources: coconuts and sunshine.  Its 1,500 residents now get 93% of their power from solar and 7% from coconut oil.

ROI of a 100kW Solar System:

from the system owner's perspective

Solar, sun and the sea; three natural benefits for the Kingman Yacht Center of Cataumet, MA.
Kingman Yacht Center

In December of 2009, Kingman president Scott Zeien had Beaumont Solar design, engineer and install a 100kW system which was then the largest solar installation on Cape Cod spanning three of the property's roofs.

In an interview this month with Trade Only Today, Zeien speaks of how his solar system is saving his boatyard money.  "Exactly two years into the operation of our solar system, we have generated 233,000 kilowatt hours of electricity, reducing our carbon footprint by 291,000 pounds, almost exactly on projection and resulting in savings of $45,000 in electricity costs over the period, or about 22% of our total electric bill," he says.

At this rate, Zeien says Kingman is on par for a realized return on total investment in less than five years, leaving an additional 15+ years of pure return.

"The effort is in keeping with our roles as stewards of the environment, the public relations benefits are significant, and it reduces long-term operating costs," states Zeien.

Best Times to Harness Opportunities of Solar

Solar photovoltaics (PV) have different production levels during different times of the year.  The peak months of solar performance are May thru August, although power production does occur year-round.

To help speed ROI, having your system come online around the month of May, means you would recoup a measurable portion of your initial investment within the first year by capturing nearly 70% of annual sun and SREC revenue for that energy produced.

Beaumont Solar's expert design and engineering teams can configure and install a PV system specifically to fit your company's consumption and financial needs.  We'll have you on your way to producing your own, clean energy to maximize your return, reduce your carbon footprint and implement the whole process from the sun to the grid.

The Lifespan of a Solar PV System is 20+ Years ... Are you being taken?

There's no denying a solar renewable energy system provides real energy savings, environmental benefits and added revenue to a bottom line.  However, the amount of those benefits rely heavily on two things: fair pricing and a seamless implementation of a quality system.

Massachusetts remains one of the biggest hotspots for solar in the US resulting in a measurable influx of solar installers looking for every viable rooftop and land parcel they can find offering every deal "under the sun".  But how can you be sure you're considering the right company for your solar investment?  Avoid being taken by avoiding the word "sub".

Some of the most successful business models involve vertical integration, managing operations internally with little to no outsourcing.  So to is a successfully implemented solar system, implemented by a vertically integrated company who is solely accountable for a system's design, engineering, permitting, installation and long-term maintenance.

Be mindful that subcontracting out the design, electrical and installation increases not only costs to the end customer, it also decreases efficiency and accuracy in system implementation, not to mention opening the door for "passing the buck" on accountability should you encounter problems with system performance down the road.

Your 20 year investment should provide an ROI on average in 3-5 years, so if you're still getting quoted prices at $4.50 per watt and up, drop the quote and contact Beaumont Solar for a quality system quoted at a fair price from a company with a licensed in-house staff experienced in the entire system implementation process.

Massachusetts to Remain One of Hottest US Solar Markets - Electric Rates Remain High

Massachusetts remains one of the fastest growing solar markets in the country tripling in size in the last two years.  The state's incentive programs continue to spur private investment in solar projects.

The Department of Energy Resources (DOER) reports the Massachusetts solar market grew from 20MW installed in 2010 to 60MW just by the third quarter 2011 with 20MW more in the pipeline.

But despite the increase in renewable energy being implemented statewide, it has not transpired into a reduction of utility rates as Western Massachusetts Electric Company and National Grid recently announced rate increases due to rising fuel costs.

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) reports that from the Berkshires to the Cape, Massachusetts had 78MW of solar generation systems up and running by the end of 2011.  In the fourth quarter, the MassCEC had issued $2 million in rebates to install 309 PV systems representing 2.2MW of the state's total solar capacity.

With demand uncertainty for solar in Europe (the one-time solar hotspot) from the European debt crisis more solar manufacturers are focusing their attention on the US, and the market in Massachusetts is expected to remain strong and reach its goal of 250MW of solar generation by 2017.

Cheers,

Phil
