Transitions

ELAM is excited to announce that we are in transition as Diane Magrane (ELAM '03) steps into a part time role as ELAM Director Emerita and Nancy Spector (ELAM '10) steps into the ELAM Director position welcoming her first class of fellows in September. Nancy is supported by a strong team that now includes Mary Ann Delaney (ELAM '08) as Associate Director, providing operational support and continuing her role in guiding the finance curriculum for the Fellowship. Diane and Nancy will be supporting alumnae activities with the sage guidance of Roz Richman, Special Assistant to ELAM Director, and Page Morahan, Founding Director.

Congratulations to Nancy, Diane, and Mary Anne
on the leadership transitions!

 Sponsored by the
University of Colorado School of Medicine

Please save the date to join us in Denver, CO this coming January, for the next ELUM professional development program, Next Level Leadership: Building personal and organizational capacity. Our Colorado hosts have put together an excellent opening with a presentation on inclusive leadership for an alumnae and Fellows dinner. The program opens the next morning with a panel of national leaders invited by and including ELAM facilitator Lily Marks to address what next level leadership looks like. In addition, you will have the opportunity to join workshops on communication skills, building ELAM/ELATE-like programs at home, and using systems engineering to improve

health care.

Expect registration to begin in early September, and keep an eye on the ELAM Edge and our website for more information in the coming weeks.

We hope to see everyone there!

London Business School Review, April 26, 2016:
Janet Napolitano, President of the University of California and former Secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security, shares more than two decades worth of leadership lessons.

Carnegie Mellon University News, June 15, 2016:
On the S&P 1500, there are more male CEOs named "John" than there are female CEOs of any name.
The "John Statistic" is just one of the ways Carnegie Mellon University alumna Therese Huston (DC'93,'96) discovered that women are underrepresented at top decision-making levels. She uncovered this phenomenon while researching her new book, "How Women Decide: What's True, What's Not, and What Strategies Spark the Best Choices."

Forbes, June 28, 2016:
Six years ago, Carnegie Mellon Economics Professor Linda Babcock was feeling overwhelmed at work. She realized that she spent "tremendous amounts" of her day doing non-promotable tasks, or "favors," which took away from work that would help her career advance. These were tasks that benefited the organization, but were not part of her core work responsibilities. Completing them would have no measurable impact on her performance or promotability. In academia, a common assignment that doesn't add to your progress is involvement in committee meetings. Instead, academics are rewarded for writing articles and research, both of which are time-consuming and can't be completed while serving on committees.
Babcock contacted four friends, three of whom were fellow female professors and suggested they meet for a drink. The group of professional women quickly bonded over the struggles they commonly faced around time management, that were compounded by the difficulty of turning down completing these office favors when asked by managers.
The "I Just Can't Say No" club was born, as well as a brand new research topic.

The Cut, July 2016:
From the Roman Forum to the 2016 campaign trail, anxiety over what women sound like is part of our cultural DNA.

The Huffington Post, July 19, 2016:
One way to think about work-life balance issues is with a concept known as The Four Burners Theory. Here's how it was first explained to me:
Imagine that your life is represented by a stove with four burners on it. Each burner symbolizes one major quadrant of your life.
  1. The first burner represents your family.
  2. The second burner is your friends.
  3. The third burner is your health.
  4. The fourth burner is your work.
The Four Burners Theory says that "in order to be successful you have to cut off one of your burners. And in order to be really successful you have to cut off two."
My initial reaction to The Four Burners Theory was to search for a way to bypass it. "Can I succeed and keep all four burners running?" I wondered.

LinkedIn, July 23, 2016:
An often-cited but frequently misunderstood communication study completed by UCLA researcher Albert Mehrabian found that 93% of face-to-face communication comes from something other than the words used.
Translation - only 7% comes from the actual words themselves.
Sounds pretty straightforward, right?
So why is this nugget of useful information so commonly misunderstood? Because in reality, the study doesn't really relate to understanding the literal meaning of the words that are communicated.
It really relates to the impact of the words or the impression the person has of the communicator.
Yes - body language and tone of voice absolutely matter in the communication process. But words matter as well, especially for understanding.

Psychology Today, July 23, 2016:
Voicing your opinion takes tact but you can do it with this simple approach

Fortune, July 25, 2016:
The founders of Thinx and Birchbox share how they like to connect with other women in the industry.

Quartz, July 25, 2016:
I'll never forget the first time I found out I was making less money than the equally qualified man sitting in the desk next to mine. It was frustrating, demoralizing, and confusing-I didn't know where things had gone wrong.
For decades, American men and women were supposed to earn equal pay for equal work: In 1963, US president John F. Kennedy signed into law a pioneering piece of legislation called Equal Pay Act, designed to prevent gender-based discrimination in the workplace nationwide. Yet more than 50 years later, women and men are still not being paid equally, in part because of the way they answer one simple question: Did you negotiate your salary?

AAMC CFAS News, July 29, 2016:
The August edition of Academic Medicine is built on the theme of women in medicine and includes articles on ensuring gender equity in academic medicine careers and the inequities in academic compensation by gender, among others.

A joint report from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities, and the AAMC provides specific actions that would enable university leaders to acquire evidence to help them address a lack of underrepresented minority scholars in the scientific workforce. The report, Increasing Diversity in the Biomedical Research Workforce, recommends, among other things, adapting and piloting interventions for reducing the threat of stereotyping graduate students in STEM fields and evaluating use of holistic review in doctoral program admissions in STEM fields.
[Note that there are a number of ELUMs on the task force that wrote this report, including: Ambika Mathur, Jennifer Woodward, PonJola Coney, Lynn Gordon, and Laura Schweitzer.]

Carmen Twillie Ambar shares five pieces of advice for senior women administrators in the academy

AAMC CFAS News, August 5, 2016:
A STAT News article reports that women get lower scores on NIH grant renewals, which may explain the attrition of mid-career women scientists. According to the article, this finding is not just bad for women scientists, but for women in general. "If you don't have women advancing to the highest positions where they can become leaders and really contribute to policy, we're going to continue to see health disparities between women and men," said Anna Kaatz, PhD, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The Chronicle of Higher Education, Academe Today, August 9, 2016:
Don't let go too quickly of all that energy, enthusiasm, and competitive spirit you put to good use on the job market.
