ELAM News to Know

A Report from ELAM at the AAMC's GFA Annual Meeting

Nancy Spector and Diane Magrane attended the annual  meeting of the Group on Faculty Affairs last week in Vancouver.
Darshana Shah speaks at the
GFA meeting.

GFA members were celebrating the 10th anniversary of the formation of the group by the AAMC and the ELAM influence was apparent - Diane Magrane and Page Morahan's involvement in the founding, 5 out of the 10 of the group's past chairs being ELUMs (Karen Novielli, Mary Moran, Luanne Thorndyke, Roberta Sonnino, and Darshana Shah), and a number of ELUMs that have served on the steering committee and subcommittees. The capstone was the honoring of Luanne Thorndyke with the Carole J. Bland Phronesis award for dedicated and selfless promotion of faculty vitality. It was an inspirational meeting, and a pleasure to see such a large confluence of ELUMs mentoring and leading within the organization.

ELUMs gathered at the meeting.

Next Level Leadership:
Building personal and organizational capacity
January 12-14, 2017
The Four Seasons
Denver, CO

 Sponsored by the
University of Colorado School of Medicine
Please save the date to join us in Denver, CO this coming January, for the next ELUM professional development program, Next Level Leadership: Building personal and organizational capacity. Our Colorado hosts have put together an excellent opening with a presentation on inclusive leadership for an alumnae and Fellows dinner. The program opens the next morning with a panel of national leaders invited by and including ELAM facilitator Lily Marks to address what next level leadership looks like. In addition, you will have the opportunity to join workshops on communication skills, building ELAM/ELATE-like programs at home, and using systems engineering to improve
health care.

Expect registration to begin in early September, and keep an eye on the ELAM Edge and our website for more information in the coming weeks.

We hope to see everyone there!

AAMC CFAS News, July 15, 2016:
And finally, the Pokémon Go craze that swept the country this week has swept its way into academic medical centers. The Washington Post reported on a number of injuries caused by people wandering around looking at the cute, cartoonish virtual world displayed on their phones rather than the cold, hard real world surrounding them on all sides. And an Arizona health sciences campus went so far as to send a warning to its students reading, "We are aware that our campus [has] been invaded by Pokemon. We believe they are friendly. Please approach them with caution and remember to look up from your phone to prevent tripping or running into something."
