"Eat Healthy, Be Healthy"
That is my very simple philosophy, and, you will find, it works. When we eat healthy foods, we are activating optimal health. When we eat unhealthy foods, we are contributing to illness. It has nothing to do with dieting or deprivation. It has everything to do with adopting a lifestyle that nurtures our well-being. What we eat directly affects how we feel: our energy, our clarity, our weight, our balance, our short term and our long term health, our self-esteem, our brain, our organs, our cells, our joy, our thoughts, our hormones, every fiber of our human being. The capacity to heal or harm our bodies, is literally in our hands, when we hold our forks; every time we choose our foods, we are choosing our health.
If we accept this premise to be true, doesn't it just make sense to make the most out of every bite? YES, it does! Here are 5 more of my favorite foods that will help super-charge your health and wellness

1. DARK LEAFY GREENS
In nature, dark leafy greens actually "breathe". They are known as the lungs of the planet, and the respiratory system of the entire plant world! They do the opposite in their world, of what our lungs do for us: where we take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide, leafy greens take in carbon dioxide and they release oxygen. So, when we ingest this dark green plant, we are providing oxygen and nourishment directly to our veins, our cells, and our blood. And THAT is critical to preventing cancer cells from igniting, and disease finding a home.
MY MOTTO:
Go green with every meal!
2. LENTILS
Gram for g ram, lentils are a more efficient and complete protein provider than red meat - and without the fat! They nourish the kidneys and adrenal glands, and keep our stomach fuller longer due to their high fiber content. Beautiful, colorful and offering a wide variety colors and sizes, lentils have anti-inflammatory properties, (great for rheumatoid arthritis), iron (helpful in combating anemia), minerals for bone health, B vitamins to stabilize blood pressure, and cholesterol-lowering fiber (ideal for heart health and the digestive system).
SUGGESTION:
To receive the most benefit, eat in combination with a complimentary protein, such as whole grains.
3. MACA
The Maca root is a hardy cruciferous vegetable cultivated in the Andean Mountains at altitudes over 12,000 feet. The Incas have used Maca for thousands of years, as a medicinal food to enhance fertility, libido, to support healthy erectile function in men, and to alleviate PMS & menopausal symptoms in women. It was used by the warriors of the Inca King for energy and stamina.
Maca is rich in essential minerals, especially selenium, calcium, magnesium, and iron, and includes fatty acids including linolenic, palmitic and oleic acids, and polysaccharides. Maca is an adaptogen, which means it helps the body adapt to stress, and promotes healthy hormonal balance. TO ENJOY:
Blends easily into your smoothie, stirs well as a replacement for cream or milk in your cup of Teecino, sprinkles nicely on top of a grains and roasted root vegetable dish.
4. QUINOA
Regarded by the Incas as a sacred food, and enduring for more than 3,000 years, quinoa is actually a seed, not a grain. Easily confused as such because of it being a low-fat, energizing, cancer-preventing, heart-protecting whole food. Quinoa is a complete protein, containing the highest grade of protein in either the animal or the plant world. Try it in it's ocher color, red or black, or mix them altogether for a beautiful presentation!
TIP: Always rinse quinoa well to remove the residue of its bitter and inedible coating - the coating (saponin) protects it against the forces of nature.
5. TURMERIC
This is one of the best plant-based anti-inflammatory roots, rivaling many prescription drugs. The active main agent, circumin, reduces the chance of stroke and is a natural inhibitor of enzymes that cause inflammation. The list of health benefits is limitless, beginning with its anticarcinogenic abilities, fighting prostate cancer, improving intestinal function, guarding against Alzheimer's by halting oxidation to detoxifying the liver, battling heart disease, and on and on.
TIP: Use turmeric daily, either in its dried spice form or freshly grated in its root form. I always refer to turmeric as part of nature's medicine cabinet.
