In our busy lives as Wine Authorities, the question we hear the most is definitely "do you have the Venus Rosé in a box?" After many thirsty months we are now able to answer that echoing query with a triumphant "YES!" Indeed friends, the beach (in a box) is back. Roll out your best welcome wagons for our prodigal box(es), plus one very exciting rectangular newcomer. Read on for details! In other news, we're rolling out the 2014 edition of the famous Vacation Pack; two crisp whites, two luscious rosés, and two sumptuous reds to accompany on your various late-summer travels (or your late-summer chillin' out at home). The wines are at a deep discount, and we're also throwing in a stylish Wine Authorities tote to help you..uh.. tote'em. Click here to read more. And finally, please allow us to digress from the usual bizarre zoological hybrids and sporting catfish to get real charitable for a moment. Each year we participate in the Fill That Bus school supply drive, and currently beside our front door, you'll find a box waiting to be filled with much needed school supplies for Durham students. Contributions of any of the following will be much appreciated:
- Boxed CrayonsGlue Sticks
- Boxed Markers
- Packages of Pencils
- Staplers
- Highlighters
- Clipboards
- Copy Paper
- Notebook Paper
- Composition Books

This Tuesday, August 12th, we present our FREE midweek wine tasting. Every Tuesday is tasty!
On August 12th, 1793, the gigantic French département known as the Rhone-et-Loire was split into two still-massive entities, (rather predictably) the Rhone and the Loire. Well, with rapturously excited hearts (and palates) we reunite the Loire and Rhone with brand new, immensely summery selections from each at our next Tasty Tuesday, which falls on the 221st anniversary of their split! Expect an exotically perfumed Viognier-based Rhone blend courtesy of glorious 3-LITER BAG IN BOX, a sharply elegant Sauvignon Blanc from Touraine, and an example of the illusive Pinot Noir rosés from Sancerre. File under: Too Big to Fail...
And don't forget:
Our Tasty Tuesday 15% Half-Case Discount!
After you taste, put together 6 bottles from our Tasty Tuesday lineup, and we'll take an entire 15% off!

This Saturday from 12 to 3 PM
in Durham & Raleigh
From Beneath the
Provençal Sun...
Return the Region's
Prodigal Sons!
Can any late summer undertaking truly compete with the prospect of a surprise trip to Provence? Not likely! Similarly worthy of our excitement, however, is the return of a slew of our favorite Provençal selections including many offerings from Domaine Pinchinat and one of the best values around from Provence's indisputable capital of red wine, Bandol! Join us this Saturday as we sample the newest vintage of Pinchinat's Cotes de Provence Blanc, starring the region's Rolle grape (better known as Vermentino in Sardinia and Favorita in Italy's Piemonte - see below the tasting section for more information). We'll continue with the estate's 3-Liter Rosé masterpiece, a great Grenache-driven value from Ventoux, and a Cotes de Provence Rouge aged to perfection. The grand finale finds us on Provence's southern shores for that gorgeous powerhouse, the aforementioned Bandol!
Domaine Pinchinat
Rosé 2013
"Venus de Pinchinat"
{organic} Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault
(Central Provence, France)
DRY, WITH CITRUS, WHITE CHERRY AND FLOWERS (3L BIB = 4 bottles!) Although the vines for this wine are within the Cotes de Provence appellation and meet all of the criteria including the correct grapes, they are at the bottom of the hills that get that designation. This wine is a stunning...
Domaine Pinchinat
Cotes de Provence Blanc 2013 {organic} 80% Rolle (Vermentino), 20% Clairette
(Central Provence, France)
POLLEN, PEAR, WHITE FLOWERS & MIXED HERBS Pinchinat is great for so many reasons. For one, the combination of Rolle (called Vermentino and Favorita in Italy) and Clairette is a perfect match, made in heaven. Secondly, the combination of historic vineyards, clean...
Arnoux ~ Vieux Clocher
Ventoux Rouge 2012
75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Carignan, 5% Cinsault (Northwestern Provence, France)
PRETTY BERRYISH FRUIT, BOLD MEDITERRANEAN SPICE The Arnoux family's entrée into winemaking can be traced back to 1717, when the Count of Vacqueyras granted the family a small parcel of land. Today, three centuries later, they attentively farm 40 hectares and produce top value Rhone wines - intensely flavored reds with naturally low yields...
Cotes de Provence Rouge 2006
{organic} Syrah, Mourvedre, Cab (Central Provence, France) DRIED BERRIES, SUBTLE SPICES & OAK, PRETTY & FIRM Alain de Welle is a nice, peaceful man. As the owner and manager of Pinchinat, it's his vision that is expressed in each glass of his wine that is served these days. Although his family has farmed this vineyard for over two centuries (and the land farmed back to pre-history), his father broke from tradition and raised him in the nearby city of Aix...
Domaine la Bastide Blanche
Bandol 2011
{organic} 76% Mourvedre, 24% Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, & Carignan
(Southern Provence, France
CASSIS & RAISIN. EARTHY SAGE & LEATHER Known as the greatest red of Provence, Bandol Rouge is made primarily from the bold Mourvedre grape, which lends the wines their power and frequently rustic edge. Sometimes, they can be so rich as to seem a bit harsh, but that isn't the case here. While this example has the typical, classical...

Vermentino by Any Other Name
While Vermentino's origins remain uncertain, its range is a broad one of importance in Italy's northwestern quarter, Mediterranean France, and in the islands of the Tyrrhenian and Ligurian seas. It was first written about under the name of Fermentino in the mid-1600s but may very well be several centuries older. Despite its many names and faces (though it's not surprising that a grape with so broad a range should exhibit dramatically different character traits from place to place), Vermentino is identical to the Rolle of Provence, the Pigato of Liguria, and even the Favorita of the Piemonte. Tune in next week for more deep cuts.
