Traces of the Craftsman's Hands

God has not forbidden us to love the world

And to love man and all his works,

To love it with all the naked senses together,

Every shape and colour, every voice and sound.

There is a shudder in our blood when we see

The traces of his craftsman's hands upon the world.

- D. Gwenallt Jones

"Summertime, and the livin' is easy..."

Well. I guess that Gershwin never worked construction in the South Texas heat! Or, as I did, spent part of my adolescence on a high-altitude farm (over 3000 ft. elevation), where the growing season was short, and where summer was a season of intense work. Living is not always easy in summer.

And yet: Summer remains something special. Maybe the Ripe Grapeslong hours    of   daylight cause the days to seem less rushed. Maybe childhood memories linger, memories of school vacations when summers seemed to stretch on without end. Maybe, deep down within our ancestral memories, even we urban dwellers sense that summer swells with growth and ripening. So my wish for you, and for me, is this:

Receive each summer day as nature's gracious gift.

May every daylight hour be blessed with light and hope.

May evening grant you rest, beneath the summer stars.

May your pace each day be slowed to bask in summer's wonder.

May there be growth and ripening, within as well as without.

                                Take a Kid Fishing

What could be more fun than an outdoor fish fry in the cool of the evening, listening to critters chirping, buzzing, and croaking, and watching the lightening bugs? -listening to the kids tell stories of spotting fish in shallow water, of kamikaze bugs diving at the water, of skipping rocks across the water? -and how awful that "stink bait" is!Kids Fishing

Take a kid fishing. "Throw out a line, pull in a memory" as they say. Take some time to get close to the ones who matter most. Relax together (oh, no electronic gadgets, please), escape into nature, and enjoy the great American tradition of exploring. There is a river, a lake, or a coast nearby. These are the places memories are made.

Fishing offers a "how-to" book on life. Kids learn to respect the space of others, to appreciate the environment, to tie knots, to be quiet, to wait, to be alert, to be observant, and to make decisions. Kids learn to cast in the right spot and wait. And oh yes, -- patience.

Did I mention that these skills apply to the spiritual life as well? No wonder Jesus chose fishermen to be his disciples.
