Dear Knitters and Kumihimo-ists!
Greetings! It feels like Winter in the mountains. The weatherman hinted about some snow coming our way and it did. We got 15" at our house! I've already been out skiing and snow shoeing
Lots of exciting stuff to share. I am very pleased that the Makiko Tada Kumihimo Workshop - 2013, that I announced last month, is FULL with a waiting list. Needless to say, I am very excited about this and looking forward to an excellent time. We have class takers coming from Maryland, Nebraska, Arizona, S. Carolina and California. Get on the waiting list if you are interested.
I spent a week in Fort Bragg with some amazing and talented braiders at a Rodrick Owen Kumihimo / Braiding Workshop. I had an absolutely great "cloud 9" kind of time! See recap below.
I have lots of new goodies for you this month, so read on. It's time to get ready for the holidays and who wouldn't love "something" Kumihimo? I have added lots of new kits and colors. Give someone a beautiful Kumihimo jewelry creation or better yet, give them a kit and they can have the pleasure of making it themselves!

Happy Braiding, Karen
P.S. Happy Halloween! By the way, that pumpkin is sitting in snow!
P.S.S. Got something you want to share? Send me an email. I am looking for more Kumihimo Artists for our showcase. Email Karen

Rodrick Owen Kumihimo / Braiding Festival |
I spent the 2nd week of October in Fort Bragg, CA participating in a Kumihimo / Braiding Workshop taught by Rodrick Owen and hosted by Jackie Wollenberg. I think I can speak for everyone that we all had a fantastic time learning and sharing. I can't encourage you enough to take advantage of classes when you can. Click here to read more and see a short slideshow of our braiding week.

Painted Peruvian Plates
Use these as pendants for necklaces or use them to accessorize. I've made many split braid necklaces and I have also used the donut as a decorative closure on a felted bag. |
| Holiday Painting with Beads Kumihimo Necklace Kits |
I call this PAINTING WITH BEADS
and I love working this way. This is a unique approach to KUMIHIMO and opens all kinds of door for endless creativity. The beaded portion of the necklace is about 16.5 inches and the overall length can be determined by the placement of your end caps on the braided sections at the start and finish of the braid.
Kit includes:
Miyuki and/or Toho 6/0 Seed Beads, 1 Spool C-Lon Tex 400 (39 yards - you'll have plenty for other projects), 5mm Magnetic All in One End Cap Closure, Instructions with photographs and tips.
You will need:
Kumihimo Disk, 8 Bobbins, Scissors, Tape Measure, Needle and Thread, Glue (like Weldbond).
You should know:
Kumihimo Round Braid Basics (left bottom up, right top down, clockwise turn to next pair), you need to know how to "drop" beads.
Colors from top to bottom:
- Black & Silver Lined Red Beads
- Antique Ivory Ceylon & Matte Metallic Bronze Beads
- Red & Galvanized Silver Beads
Cost of Kit: $24.00

Kumihimo Tip #15 - "Dropping" Beads
Do you know how to "drop" beads? It's really easy and I will give you a few pointers.
You can thread you beads on any cord they will slide on to. If I am making a necklace with beads as accent only, I will thread beads on many types of cords including petite satin cord (available in 33 colors). If I am making a necklace that is "all" beads then I choose to use a stronger cord like C-Lon Tex 400 (available in 21 colors).
The C-Lon Tex 400 has some weight to it and works as a "stand alone" braid as well.
Dropping beads is as easy as 1, 2,3:
1. Gently lift the cord end from the disk and slide the bead toward the point of braid.
2. Let the bead fall into place and "drop" underneath the horizontal warp (see picture above).
3. Then continue the move and secure the cord end into its new location.
It's that easy!
P.S. This is an 8 stand round braid.

Kumihimo "Artist" of the Month
Suzanne Woodhead - Truckee, CA
Suzanne is another one of the talented women in our local Kumihimo group. She does meticulous and beautiful work. The necklace to the left was created from a What a Knit Furnace Glass Focal Bead kit. The necklace below is Suzanne's own version of Painting with Beads. I love the colors and sparkle.
Suzanne is one of the CNCH committee co-chairs for the Textile Games 2013 to held in Olympic Valley at the Resort at Squaw Creek. The work they have done for this conference is incredible and anyone who plans to attend will certainly have an "over the top" experience.
I will be teaching Kumihimo 101, Kumihimo Painting with Beads and Kumihimo Split Braid. I am really looking forward to the conference.
