Pahlmeyer
The Pahlmeyer wines listed below are not yet in stock. They are expected to arrive at the store in mid-December of 2014. Pre-orders for these wines can be placed by emailing Jon Ellison at jonellison@marquis-wines.com
2012 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay - $115.00
"Full, bright, green-tinged gold. Sexy lime leaf, tropical fruits and leesy hazelnut on the nose. Rich and energetic, with pineapple and citrus zest flavors complicated by sweet oak and underlying minerality. In a distinctly Burgundian style, finishing with very good lift and verve. This is consulting winemaker Bibiana Gonzalez Rave's first vintage here and she is in the process of reducing the use of new oak and lees stirring."

2011 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir - $115.00
"Medium red. Reticent, musky nose opens to reveal perfumed notes of red berries, rose petal, spices and herbs. Supple and velvety on the palate, with lovely harmonious acidity framing the tangy, concentrated red fruit flavors. Offers a lovely combination of silkiness of texture and energy. Finishes long and lively, with suave tannins. Lovely pinot."
- Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, May/Jun 13 92 points
2012 Napa Valley Merlot - $125.00
"The 2012 Merlot is a much bigger, richer effort (15.2% alcohol) displaying lots of black fruit and mocha notes, a chewy, endearing, fleshy character, and a pure finish. The tannins are sweet and the wine has that wonderful sucrosity from ripeness, not sugar. This should turn out to be a gorgeous Merlot to drink over the next 15+ years."
- The Wine Advocate #209 91-94 points
2012 Proprietary Red - $199.00
"The 2012 Proprietary Red (made from the same general blend) cuts a much deeper, broader swath across the palate. Deep blackberry, black cherry, cassis, creamy vanillin and honeyed fatness and richness are present in this lusty, full-bodied, classic Napa Cabernet-based wine. The finish lasts for 40-45 seconds. This blockbuster red should drink well for 25+ years."

About
The range of wines now produced at Pahlmeyer has expanded to include Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir and the Jayson range of wines, but this estate will forever be famous for its Proprietary Red that was created with the vision of producing a "California Mouton". The very first commercial vintage release of the Proprietary Red in 1986 earned a rating of 94 from Robert Parker and ever since, the wines have been highly sought after. Mr. Parker has also remarked that Pahlmeyer is "one of California's super-star producers. Pahlmeyer wines have a fabulous track record of aging well. Founder Jayson Pahlmeyer has a track record for tapping rising stars as his winemakers - from Randy Dunn to Bob Levy, Helen Turley and most recently Erin Green. Finding a winemaker to follow in the footsteps of these legends was no easy task. But in 2012, Jayson found two: Kale Anderson, director of winemaking, Napa Valley, and Bibiana González Rave, consulting winemaker, Sonoma Coast. With more than 10 years of winemaking experience with luminaries such as Mark Aubert, Philippe Melka and David Abreu, Kale Anderson is carrying on the Pahlmeyer tradition of producing rich, powerful Napa Valley wines, including the winery's flagship Bordeaux-style proprietary red blend. A native of Colombia, Bibiana González Rave earned a degree in Oenology from the University of Bordeaux before spending several harvests in Burgundy and South Africa and settling in California where she worked for Peay Vineyards, Au Bon Climat, Qupe and most recently, Lynmar. She is now in charge of overseeing the production of Pahlmeyer's Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Pio Cesare
The Pio Cesare wines are not yet in stock at Marquis Wine Cellars. Pre-orders can be placed by emailing Jon Ellison at jonellison@marquis-wines.com and he will confirm the timing of you order as the wines listed below will arrive at various times over the coming months.
2013 Arneis Langhe DOC - $28.00"Slightly aromatic, with reach and ripe fruit, round, refreshing and crispy fragrance. Pleasant to drink. To be consumed rather young, 2 to 3 years maximum."
- Winemaker's Note2011 Barbera d'Alba DOC - $30.00
"The 2011 Barbera d'Alba delivers more aromatic intensity in the form of Indian spice, leather and mild tobacco. It does not limit itself to those savory aromas. In fact, it also delivers a healthy dose of fresh fruit, mostly blackberry and plum, to flesh out and enrich the mouthfeel. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018."

2011 Fides Single Vineyard Barbera d'Alba DOC - $50.00
"A sweet, spiced bouquet leads to black cherry, blackberry, cloves and leather in Pio Cesare's 2011 Barbera d'Alba Fides. The French oak is better balanced than it has been in the past, which allows the fruit to shine. This supple, resonant Barbera is delicious today and should continue to drink well for a handful of years."
- Vinous by Antonio Galloni, Oct 2013 90 points
2010 Barolo DOCG - $82.00 "The 2010 Barolo is a great fall back wine for those who want to know the flavor profile of a classic, well-made Barolo. This is a textbook wine, especially in the exceptional 2010 vintage. Black fruit and prune is folded together with delicate tones of cigar ash, crushed mineral, licorice, white truffle and dried raspberry. The tannins are firm, but polished and the wine leaves a lasting imprint of dark fruit and cola on the elegant finish. Drink: 2016-2028." - eRobertParker.com #213 95 points
2009 Barbaresco "Il Bricco" DOCG - $120.00 (very limited availability) "A modern muscle is flexed with the 2009 Barbaresco Il Bricco that shows more evident oak spice on the bouquet. Juicy layers of dark fruit and dried cherry are pressed between layers of spice, cardamom and toasted almond. The tannins are on the sweet side and are surrounded by thick layers of ripe fruit. It's a wine with a very likeable and approachable personality. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025." - The Wine Advocate #207 92 points
2010 Barbaresco "Il Bricco" DOCG - $120.00
"A single vineyard Barbaresco from very ripe grapes of several plots in the famous "Il Bricco" Estate, owned by the Pio Family. Fermented in stainless steel tanks; 15 days of skin contact. This wine ages in French oak for 30 months. 70% of it in new barriques and 30% in a 20 hectoliters casks. Powerful and structured, rich in ripe fruit, opulent, spicy and with a very long life. Produced in small quantities and only in excellent vintages." 2009 Barolo "Ornato" DOCG - $120.00 (limited availability)"The 2009 Barolo Ornato, on the other hand, shows a "modern" approach with softer fruit layers and thicker, velvety texture. The fact that the fruit is sourced in the Serralunga d'Alba township (known for more opulent wines) underlines the wine's open and overt personality. Given the vintage, I'd apply a shorter drinking window to this wine. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022."
- The Wine Advocate #207 93+ points
2010 Barolo "Ornato" DOCG - $120.00 "Executed in a bolder style, the 2010 Barolo Ornato is born in the Serralunga d'Alba township where Nebbiolo tends to show more structure, power and density. Indeed, the richness smoothness and overall opulence of the 2010 vintage is irresistible. This is an elegant and articulate wine that boasts a long aromatic range, spanning from berry fruit to ethereal balsam oil. Yet, all the while, it shows the spicy endnotes and softness of barrel aging. Barolo Ornato is aged in new barrique (70%) and large casks. It's almost ready to drink out of the gate. Drink: 2015-2028."

About
The Pio Cesare winery was founded in 1881 by Cesare Pio who was one of the very first wine producers to believe in the great potential and quality of Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera and in the other great wines of Piemonte. Since then five generations of the Pio Cesare family have been producing traditional Piemontese wines in its ancient cellars, located in the center of the town of Alba. The cellars walls date back to the Roman Empire period, 50 B.C. Recently, significant investments have been made to rebuild and restructure the cellars and the winery's facilities. A new fermentation cellar was built with a new racking by gravity area and a new barrel ageing room, 12 meters underneath the existing building and the Roman Walls. Brand new bottling and labelling equipment was installed in a newly built portion of the winery. Pio Cesare owns more than 50 hectares (130 acres) of vineyards, located in the most highly rated and better exposed areas. In addition to their own vineyards, Pio Cesare has fostered long-term relationships with growers for several generations and manages all aspects of viticulture in these vineyards. These growers have been selling grapes to the family for generations. The wines are fermented and aged using both modern winemaking techniques in tandem with the most traditional methods of the region. After an appropriate ageing in large casks and barriques of different French oaks the wines are bottle-aged before their release. All these elements contribute to the continuously high quality of the wines of Pio Cesare, while paying tribute to the vines and to the terroir. The production of the wines of Pio Cesare is intentionally limited in order to maintain their high quality. Year after year, the wines are ranked among the world's best and most highly regarded. The winery's dedication to quality and respect for tradition and terroir, has allowed Pio Cesare to reach a prominent position among the wine producers of Piemonte. Year after year, the wines gain international recognition as some of the world's best wines and are known and respected by the finest wine lovers and collectors.
