This week we have on offer a selection of wines from one of the most highly acclaimed producers in all of Piedmont, Elio Grasso. The wines listed below in the Pre-Offer section are not yet in stock but can be reserved through this offering. It is expected that the wines will arrive at the store at the end of November of 2014. We also have a few bottles of older vintages in stock in case you need to fill in any holes in your cellar.

About
Elio Grasso Logo Elio Grasso has 14ha of prized steep hillside vineyards in the east of the Monforte commune. He has spent more than 20 years working his historic family vineyards and has recently relinquished the winemaking responsibility to his son Gianluca. An existing pair of refined, scented Barolos have been complemented by a barrique-aged Barolo from the replanted Runcot, a superior plot within Gavarini. As with other top barrique-aged examples from this area there is an inherent richness and structure from the fruit to marry with that from the oak. Maceration times are longer than for his neighbours' wines and Runcot, already impressive, seems certain to achieve greatness as the vines age.

Pre-Offer Wines

2013 Chardonnay "Educato" - $36.00
"Planted to 1.3 HA in 1986 in the Gavarini slopes, Elio Grasso dedicated himself to a white from the Langhe. With only 7,000 bottles produced a year, producing a top quality wine each year is a much a priority in this wine as it is with his award winning Nebbiolo and Barbera based reds. The yields are restricted and the wine is fermented in French oak barriques. After completing malolatic fermentation, the wine is aged for 7 months in mature barriques. This restrained style of winemaking allows for richness in the wine without overwhelming the acidity. Supple, ripe tree fruit and a core of bright acid are reinforced by luscious honey, fig and toasted nut aromatics."

2012 Dolcetto d'Alba "Dei Grassi" - $29.00
"Good bright, dark red. Raspberry and spice aromas suggest a juicy wine. Boasts good sappy flavor intensity, with a slightly herbal aspect giving the finish a faint dry edge. "A good vintage for everyday drinking, with a focus on fruits and flowers," says Grasso about the 2012 dolcettos. This is 13.5% alcohol, a good full level for the year."

2013 Gavarini Langhe Nebbiolo - $35.00
"This wine is produced from younger vines planted in the Barolo appellation or from the specific Runcot vineyard if the vintage does not merit a wine of the Runcot Riserva quality. The grapes are hand harvested and undergo a slow fermentation in stainless steel tanks, with daily pumping over. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in tank until bottling in April or May of the following year. The absence of any wood allows for a very pure, expressive style with lovely red fruit notes on the nose. An excellent wine to enjoy in the coming winter months."

2010 Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate
- $118.00 for 750ml
- $250.00 for 1.5L
"The 2010 Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate is a more muscular and layered expression with a softer quality of fruit and a good amount of power and muscle at the back. Its aromatic delivery is constant and steady with an ever-changing array of red fruit, dark spice, cola and anisette. The tannins are particularly well defined and silky. Drink: 2018-2038."

2010 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera
- $118.00 for 750ml
- $250.00 for 1.5L
"The 2010 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is an amazing wine born 430 meters above sea level from white limestone and sandy soils. The elegance expressed by the wine is unforgettable. It opens to a pretty garnet color with ethereal tones of licorice and balsam herb with sharp, delineated contours. This vineyard is usually harvested later than the others, so the growing cycle is extra long and steady. The wine is silky, finessed and profound. Drink: 2018-2040."

Other Vintages Currently In Stock at Marquis

2009 Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate - $104.00 (7 bottles available)
"The 2009 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Casa Mate come from 35-year-old vines planted at 350 meters above sea level on mixed sand and clay soils. Gianluca says this is always the first vineyard to flower each year. This expression is without a doubt the more masculine of the two, with bold lines filled tight with black fruit, plum, licorice, tobacco and leather. However, the wine is not all muscle and brawn. It, too, offers a beautiful floral note of pressed red rose that lingers long on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2035."

2009 Barolo Gavarini Chinera
- $104.00 for 750ml (6 bottles available)
- $210.00 for 1.5L (4 magnums available)
"The 2009 Barolo Gavarini Vigna Chiniera is a beautifully delicate and elegant wine with fruit sourced from 35-year-old vines at 400 meters above sea level. Those higher elevations have helped to shape finely detailed aromas, despite the warmer vintage. Bright notes of pressed rose, violets, licorice, spice, tar and plum all call out your attention. Solid tightness in the mouth slowly relaxes to reveal nuanced flavors of bright cherry, spice and leather. Each time you return to the glass, the wine offers yet another dimension. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2035."

2007 Barolo Runcot Riserva - $174.90 (8 bottles available)
"Elio Grasso did not produce the Barolo Riserva in 2005, 2009 or 2011. However, you can enjoy the stunning 2007 Barolo Riserva Runcot shortly. Super-low yields in the vineyard (down to three clusters per vine) make for a wine of enormous intensity and beauty. The whole effect is truly spectacular. Soaring aromas of dark fruit, licorice, tar, pressed rose, lavender, garden herb, dried mint and brimstone develop momentum and power with each swirl of the glass. Nebbiolo-s trademark structure holds the wine together, but the beautiful 2007 vintage has added its part with extra layers of softness and richness. This is pure pleasure. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2038."

Special E-Offer Discount

Castello di Monsanto 2001 Chianti Classico Riserva "Il Poggio"

Regular Price $159.90     E-Offer Price $129.90
"Monsanto's 2001 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio reveals earthiness, menthol, spices, leather and ripe dark fruit in a full-bodied expression of this wine. The 2001 remains an intense Il Poggio with an additional dimension of volume and sweetness from the French oak, which is very prominent in this vintage. That said, this is a wine that offers considerable upside from further cellaring. In 2001 Il Poggio was aged in French oak barriques of which 40% were new. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2026."

Castello di Monsanto 1999 Chianti Classico Riserva
Regular Price $189.90     E-Offer Price $149.90
"Made from a blend of 90% Sangioveto, 7% Canaiolo and 3% Colorino, it spent 18 months in used French oak barrels. The single-vineyard 1999 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is another strong effort from this property. It opens with beautiful aromatics followed by deeply expressive notes of leather, spices, mint, tobacco and sweet dark fruit. Made in a big, muscular style, it will benefit from another few years in the bottle which will allow its full range of tertiary nuances to develop. This blend of 90% Sangioveto, 7% Canaiolo and 3% Colorino was aged in new and used French oak barrels for 18 months. Anticipated maturity: 2009- 2019."
