E-Newsletter Series Highlights
| Did you miss any of the e-newsletters in this exciting series? You can just click on the links in the paragraphs below to access our archives!
The April e-newsletter highlighted the Tar Wars Program. This program was created in 1988 by a family physician (Jeff Cain, MD) and a teacher (Glenna Pember). Tar Wars focuses on the short-term effects of tobacco use, allowing students to come to the conclusion that tobacco takes a nasty toll right away. The Illinois Academy of Family Physicians Family Health Foundation of Illinois manages the Tar Wars program in this state. Thanks to family physician volunteers and the dedicated efforts of several Illinois county health departments, Tar Wars has been a fixture in schools since 2000. Visit the Tar Wars website at www.tarwars.org for more information.
The AAFP's Talk With Your Doctor Initiative was the topic of the lead article in the May e-newsletter. For this initiative, the AAFP has partnered with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) to encourage family physicians to talk to patients, friends, and family about tobacco dependence. Brief tobacco cessation interventions are successful, and patients want to be asked. Go to the AAFP Ask and Act Toolkit website for valuable resources.
Pharmacologic and Non-Pharmacologic therapies were the focus of the July e-newsletter. According to the guidelines set forth by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, healthcare providers should offer their nicotine-dependent patients with at least one of the effective brief cessation interventions that are available. Generally, it has been found that intense interventions are more effective in producing long-term smoking cessation results. Access the July issue for links to resources on social support treatment, skills training/problem solving in cessation and abstinence techniques, and pharmacotherapy.
Finally, the September e-newsletter included an interview with Illinois Academy of Family Physicians President, Dr. Carrie Nelson, MD, MS, FAAFP, regarding how she tailors her approach when dealing with smoking cessation in a patient with chronic health issues. Dr. Nelson "spends more time and attention on encouraging smoking cessation in her patients with chronic disease," and is "more inclined to have them come back within a shorter interval to continue to support their smoking cessation efforts." Visit the September issue for further reading from the American Diabetes Association, American Lung Association, World Health Organization, and more!
