Pharmacologic and Non-Pharmacologic Therapies:
Resources You Can Use

According to the guidelines set forth by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, healthcare providers should provide their nicotine-dependent patients with at least one of the effective brief cessation interventions that are available.  In general, it has been found that intense interventions are more effective in producing long-term results in smoking cessation.

The main treatment elements are as follows:

1: Social support from clinicians and healthcare providers in the form of encouragement and support.

  • Illinois Tobacco Quitline - Provide your patients with access to registered nurses, respiratory therapists, and certified tobacco-treatment counselors available 7 days a week from 7am-11pm.
  • AAFP Prescription to Quit Smoking - Work with your patient to complete this form.
  • Group Visits - Set up group counseling visits at your practice to allow patients to receive encouragement and support from both their physician and their fellow patients.

2: Skills training/problem solving in cessation and abstinence techniques.

3: Pharmacotherapy, such as nicotine-replacement (gum, patches, etc.) and bupropion HCl.

In order to be most effective, healthcare providers should use a combination of therapies and reassess the patient's cessation progress and needs at each subsequent visit.
