Career Jobs for Graduating Seniors - Parent Meeting
Parents, please join us on Thursday, April 25th, 6-8 pm to learn how your Senior can secure a Career-track job in advanced manufacturing after graduation. Whether your Senior is going straight to college or seeking employment, learn about the benefit of APA's unique "Career Job" process in which students have the option of entering the workforce either full-time or part-time in the summers and holidays while they're home from college. Refreshments will be served!
Career Day a Big Success!

On March 15th, APA held its first Career Day to help students learn from and network with over 40 professionals from throughout Chicago. All APA students were challenged to be "interview ready" so they arrived at school that day dressed professionally with their resumes in-hand. After an inspiring keynote address from Mr. Speller, engineer and former APA teacher, students attended three different career panels to hear a diversity of professionals from various fields including engineering, manufacturing, health care, education and social justice who shared their career path experiences. In keeping with APA's mission, all of the guests were asked to share how advanced manufacturing and technology positively impacts the work that they do.

The second half of the event was dedicated to the students' own professional development by practicing their soft skills. All students participated in at least two mock-interviews where interviewers asked tough questions and provided encouragement and constructive feedback. Students especially enjoyed the interviews and specifically appreciated the feedback on aspects such as their nonverbal communication, and how to best present one's strengths and weaknesses.

92% of students thought Career Day was motivational. Special thanks to all 42 volunteers who made our Career Day an overwhelming success! Students, teachers, and volunteers alike agreed this will be a regular part of the APA experience.
Spring Break Internships 2013
100% of students reported having an
'Excellent' or 'Good' experience!

Jeff Kopacz, HR Manager for Dudek & Bock with Reginald Jones and Marcasia Chambers.  Marcasia, who enjoyed learning to use gauges in the Quality Dept., told us about her internship "I loved the environment and I would like to go into manufacturing." Reginald who spent most of his time in the Accounting Dept. reflected "I love the collaboration with the other workers."

Delafonte Armstrong reported he had and excellent internship at PK Tool because "I felt like I was apart of something special; knowing that I helped out with a part that is in a Ford transmission."

Bonnie and Genoveva with Paasche Airbrush and Michael White and Rashad Kemp. Michael felt he had an excellent internship because "Ms. Pettersen was an amazing host, she was extremely helpful and patient." Rashad told us she would like the opportunity to work there again because "I know I would turn my life around if I worked here."

Neopatra Hawkins and Deon Shanklin, shown here with their Internship Binder to document their learning experiences, spent the week with Steve Koch at Plymouth Tube. Both Deon and Neopatra agreed their favorite part was "watching the 48 slitter operate..[and] Steve answering every question we had."

Special Thanks to: Atlas Tools, Aztec Plastics, C.Cretors Co., DeCardy Diecasting, Dudek & Bock, Freedman Seating, Laystrom Manufacturing, PK Tool, Paasche Airbrush, Plymouth Tube, Saporito Finishing, Tempel Steel Co., and Unique Active.

APA Connections

American Federation of Teachers' President Randi Weingarten visited APA on January 17th. Ms. Weingarten met with APA teachers and manufacturing partners to learn about our unique programs. APA Student Ambassador Kenny Plymouth showed Ms. Weingarten how he operates computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines, explaining that manufacturing allows him to use his imagination to create new things.
Jay Williams, Adviser to President Obama on Manufacturing, visited APA on January 30th. Mr Williams spent the morning visiting Austin Polytech and then met with the Chicago Manufacturing Renaissance Council.

Northwestern University, McCormick School of Engineering students visited APA's Project Lead The Way class on February 26th to teach APA students how to assemble electrical field surgical kits for use in developing countries.

British Secretary of Education Michael Gove visited APA on March 7th.

Spring Job Shadowing 2013

On March 6th, 18 APA students participated in Job Shadow Day.  Students had a chance to see how what they learned in school applies in the real world while visiting some of APA's dedicated manufacturing partners. They toured the facilities then shadowed employees in different departments to learn about different aspects of manufacturing including engineering design, marketing, production, and quality control. Eleven out of the 18 students that participated in Job Shadow Day already have a NIMS credentials. For these students in particular it was great to put their knowledge to work on the production floor.

Special Thanks to: Applied Hydraulic Service, C. Cretors Co., DeCardy Diecasting, Dudek & Bock, Freedman Seating, Laystrom Manufacturing, PortionPac, and Temple Steel Co.
Welcome New
Youth Coordinator!

APA and CLCR are thrilled to welcome our new Youth Coordinator, Seth El-Jamal. Mr. El-Jamal has over 12 years of experience working with youth and has a Masters in Social Work. He is excited to be working with current and future students to help them develop an understanding of how "E&M" (Engineering and Manufacturing) impacts their daily lives; how an "E&M" education can build leadership skills while making them highly marketable to colleges and employers and just how cool it is! Over the past month, Mr. El-Jamal has been focused on introducing "E&M"  both to the APA freshmen and to 7th & 8th graders around Austin through interactive and fun activities that encourage students to work together, think outside of the box and communicate their ideas clearly with each other.
