Support our Students
| It takes more than a traditional high school budget to help our students engineer their future.
We need to invest in our world class machine shop, college- and career-prep program, and work-based projects and activities.
For example, APA has a SkillsUSA chapter in which students meet weekly to work on school and community leadership projects, attend regional and state conferences and participate in job skill competitions.
Please help by sending us a check, payable to the Center for Labor and Community Research, at 3411 West Diversey, Suite 10, Chicago, Illinois 60647.

APA Welcomes a New Principal!
|
Ms. LaTonya Austin is the newly selected Principal of Austin Polytechnical Academy for a 5-year contract. Ms. Austin was interviewed by the CPS Chief Area Officer, APA teacher, student, parent, community, and industry partner stakeholders and Local School Council members. Of the eight candidates interviewed, Ms. Austin was a clear favorite among all the interviewing committee members.
Prior to her selection; Ms. Austin was the Principal of the Global Visions Academy appointed by the CEO Arnie Duncan. Under her leadership the school acquired a catalogue of accomplishments, which include: increasing the number of students with access to and taking AP courses and sustaining expanded learning opportunities for 9th- 12th grade students despite budget constraints. Before becoming a principal, Ms. Austin was the Assistant Principal at Fenger Achievement Academy, and has been employed with Chicago Public Schools since 1997.
Ms. Austin has obtained an extensive educational background, which has helped her in working towards providing the best education for the children of Chicago. She received a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and secondary education from Chicago State University, a Master's Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Northern Illinois University, and Masters of Science in Mathematics from Chicago State University. Ms. Austin is also currently working on her Ed.D from University of Illinois-Chicago in the Urban Educational Leadership Doctorial Program.
"APA will provide students with a well-rounded education that includes a foundation in advanced academics, technical skills, and social mores. At Austin Polytechnical, we believe in teaching the whole child and the empowerment of educators."

APA Squad Gets the Word Out
|

For the month of August an enthusiastic group called the 'APA Squad' attended a variety of Westside events, passing out fliers and talking to people about Austin Polytech. The Squad consists of Local School Council members, CLCR staff, students, teachers and our new principal who have attended local health fairs, community organization meetings, youth groups, CAPS meetings, churches, the Taste of Austin, and even got on Gospel Radio 1570 to let people know what a unique program we have. We received mostly positive responses from Westsiders, many of whom were intrigued by our combination of college prep, manufacturing and engineering, and opportunities for students to get industry credentials and real-world working experience. We've spent most of the last four years focused internally as we worked to fully-implement the design of our school, now is the time to be proactive to make sure everyone knows we are a one-of-a-kind educational resource for the community. Thanks to everyone who participated in the APA Squad!

Summer Job Update: Michael Hudson
| |
Austin Polytech graduate Michael Hudson displays a project he is working on at DeCardy Diecasting. He is designing a "Checklist" for the Water Recycling System newly installed at this APA Partner. This Checklist will cover: Daily Operations, Daily Maintenance, and Periodic Maintenance (e.g. in winter "glycol" must me added to system). The Checklist that Michael is creating will ensure that this quarter million dollar investment will produce the returns in water saving, improved part quality, and cost saving.
This is the second summer that Michael has worked at DeCardy. When asked how the second summer varied from his first summer of employment he said: "This year the manager's didn't have to come around as much as they did last year to help me. They just gave me the Project I was to do, explained their objectives, and let me get the job done. I was able to work independently most of the time."
This fall Michael is heading to the University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff, where he will pursue a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. Eventually he plans to own his own company. He said: "One of the things I've learned these last two summers here at DeCardy is the each employee is important to the success of the company. I'm going to remember that when I have employees at my own company."

CLCR and APA Hit Washington
by: APA Teacher Pete Schoedel
|
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) invited CLCR and APA to present their shared experiences at the annual AFT conference in Washington, DC. CLCR Director Dan Swinney, senior student Torres Hughes and I (Engineering Teacher) offered a breakout session focused on creating community and business partnerships that equip students for success. Swinney explained the road that has been taken to create APA and its partnerships, I highlighted the opportunities that the relationships between APA, CLCR and its partners offer to motivate students and prepare them for college and careers, and Hughes explained how APA helped make his high school experience a success.
In addition to participating in the AFT conference, we had the opportunity to experience the mechanisms of the Washington, DC political arena. We were given private tours of the Senate annex building and the Capitol Building. We saw President Pro Tempore Senator Inouye of Hawaii and Senate Majority Leader Senator Reid of Nevada and visited the offices of Senate Republican Leader Senator McConnell of Kentucky. We also talked with staff members of our U.S. House Representatives, the Honorable Danny Davis and the Honorable Jan Schakowsky. Torres Hughes was so affected by these tours that his interest in a path through politics was greatly increased. Thank you to the American Federation of Teachers for providing these opportunities!

Digital Divide Computer Getaway
|
On Tuesday August 16, in partnership with Digital Development Corporation (DDC) and the Center for Labor & Community Research (CLCR), Austin Polytechnical Academy (APA) awarded a free refurbished desktop computer to incoming freshmen who enrolled for the 2011-12. After participating in an orientation, the students came to the lunch room to pay fees, receive a gym uniform and pick up a free computer. Alex Lyons, Chairman of the DDC, said, "Our youth, today, need computers to compete in high school. APA Principal LaTonya Austin continued the sentiment by adding. "Technology is an increasingly important part of our society, including the educational process."
